Palm-pedals and lapsteel?

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to use palm-pedals on a lapsteel?

Lots of folks here have experimented with those. Larry Bell played a Dobro with palm pedals years ago...Larry?

Hey Klinke,

I have been working on two Palm-Pedal applications for lap and "Dobro" use.

A 6 pedal + one knee lever (A,B,C & D)
for 7 or 8 string lap.

And a three pedal unit for Dobro (GBDGBD)
changing the top three strings only.
3rd string down a whole step
2nd string up a half step
1st string up a whole step
(gets you open I, IV & V7 chords)

How easy is it to work those pedals with your right hand and pick with the fingers of that hand? Did anyone ever attach one of those floor pedal gadgets that Phil Baugh used to a lap steel? BW

The McKinsey sytem is the only one currently made using cables.
I can't help you find them.

There's a picture of Weldon Myrick playing Dobro with palm pedals, in Stacy Phillips' Dobro book. And I believe Curtis Burch(New Grass Revival) tried 'em on a dobro as well, and wasn't real happy with the results. Tuning problems...

I have always craved a simple small one string bender that would be a bolt-on for gibson's EH models. I want it to flat or sharp the 3rd string. a lever like a bixby that would sit over strings or hinge left-right would be cool.

It is a "Bigsby" not Bixby!

Is it a "String raise" or "String lower" that you are after?
What is the tuning that you are using?
Can you describe the characteristics of the "EH" model guitar?
(make, year, ect.)

The Ginson EH150 / EH 100 etc were pre-war guitar-shaped lapsteels, the tailpiece-bridge is a one-piece unit with a bladelike breakover, its a one piece unit. They are used on Console Grands too. On the EH there is very little body surface behind the tailpiece. If the 3rd string could go up or down a halfstep in an E or D tuning it would be great, if it did both , wow!

My problem with existing stuff is I need my hand behind that tailpiece because I hold these guitars like a normal guitar, which is unorthadox but necessary for me.

Chuck,

Have you tried raising that 3rd string with your ring finger behind the bar? It's a bit awkward at first but some woodshedding makes it easier the more you do it. You can find other raises on other strings as well ...first 3 strings the easiest.

I sure would like to find a website or some material that expounds on that technique.

Hi Guys,

If any of you are interested in seeing the PS-67F “Pedal-Slide” guitar tailpiece in action…. Robert McBride (one of the “house” guitar players) at the Illinois Steel Guitar Jam will have his guitars on display and will be available for personal demonstrations… “Pulling-off” some very credible “Mooney” and “Sneaky Pete” licks.
His “Bio” includes working with Shelly West and he plays a “Not-So-Standard” Telecaster set-up with a Glaser ‘B’ and a Bigsby ‘G’ bender as his primary “Axe”.
So, he knows his way around “Bender” technology.
If you have any questions or interest in “going down this road” out there…
Be sure to visit with Bob at the convention on June 27th .
It should be quite an event!
