I had the pleasure of visiting Greg in Renfro Valley . Greg is the staff steel guitarist with the Renfro Valley jamboree, and he did 5 shows per day using pedal steel(ZB of course!), non pedal steel, dobro, guitar and singing as well! He did gospel shows, bluegrass, fifties tunes, hard core country gold, sang Buck Owens using his silver sparkle Tele, - and this guy excels at everything!
To start at 10 in the morning and finish 10 p.m. demands dedication and concentration, but Greg went at it with unwavering enthusiasm and professionalism.
Greg is mostly known as the world`s foremost expert on ZB guitars, but it was quite an eye opener to discover his prowess as a musician.
Whether doing rapid 16th notes solos in modern country tunes, doing country gold emulating Green/Brumley style of playing, or even doing doo wop singing, - Greg came through with shining colors.
I was in the company with a British steeler, and we both left the Jamboree that night being very impressed with Greg. What a musician! |
