Topic: Every steel guitar player should help! |

Forumites are nearly always talking about some way to boost the public acceptance and of course, public understanding of what steel guitar is all about. Even when there seems to be a general conflict about what this fine instrument should be called......there remains an extremely cohesive bond among all steel players; beginners, intermediates and professionals alike.
So here is an opportunity to pay our dues to those many that have gone on before us. Some of the newbies believe that Nashville was the origin of 'our kind o' music' but, in reality greats like Red Foley, Homer and Jethro and even JERRY BYRD....got their starts at the Renfro Valley Barn Dance. Their high voltage radio broadcasts acquainted the world with the many big names of the day as well as tho' that were on their way up.
NOW, each of us has the opportunity to repay our early day mentors.
Lexington, Kentucky, television station WTVQ-TV is having a contest to choose Central Kentucky's 7-Wonders. One of them is the RENFRO VALLEY........
PLEASE, go to www.wtvq.com.......scroll down to the bottom of the page and in the center is an item to "click" on, an ICON dubbed "7 Kentucky Wonders".
Renfro still has a good chance of taking the first place honors, providing YOU and each of your family and friends take a second or two to cast your vote.

I don't mind casting a vote and will...but all players should remember that there is far more to steel guitar than the "our kind of music" mentioned. I worry that threads like this tend to continue to "pigeonhole" steel as a country-only instrument, which it's not. I do think it should be supported in ALL areas, though - which is why I'll vote.

| Before the electric steel there was the National Tricone lap steel. I love to hear old Western (Cowboy & Western) from that pre electric era.Remember 'Hawaii Calls'? At times a Mainlander would get to show his stuff. I guess I'm nostalgic for the sounds of Hoot Gibson and his Hawaiian Trio as well as the blazing slide work, both acoustic and electric, of Sol Hoopii. The history of the 'first ten' years of National Guitar and electric slide is a great legacy to use as an educational tool regarding the slide guitar evolution. I have not read the history of Jerry Byrd but I can imagine Jerry in his youth laying in bed at night listening to the radio soaking in the many styles of the early pioneers. The Steel Guitar has yet to really be fully appriciated by in my opinion. Great post and interesting information regarding the Renfro Valley Barn Dance. |

I've been there and visited Greg a few times. It is a neat place and Greg and the band are great. He always gets to do some Buck Owens as well.

What a surprise, I didn't even know the contest existed. Greg spentThanksgiving with us but didn;t mention this , maybe he didn't know about it.

Many thanks to each of you........
It would be nice to get the entire FORUM to vote in this contest. It would be good for all of us; steel guitar in general; and, for Refro Valley.
If we want steel guitar to be out front then we have to put it there by activism and by voting in issues such as this.
We cannot sit back and wait for the other guy to do it for us. OK?
