Hello all , Thanx for the replies & kind words.
The CD that I mentioned , well, Here's the story: Put your glasses on and get a cup of coffee.
I'm 41 now, but all my life my family & I had heard about Dad being on The Arthur Godfrey Show. There is a reel to reel audio only recording of his first appearance that night where Arthur was so knocked out that he says, live on the air, "I'm taking that boy out of the competition and hiring him". After that, Dad appeared every week as a special guest from 1951-1952. All my life, we've asked people "In the business" and I've Emailed hundreds of CBS people that I found on line , asking for some video footage of these performances when my Father was on T.V. But everybody says " I don't know" or "They're locked up in a vault and nobody can get at them" or "They didn't use video tape back then, it was all live T.V. and wasn't taped" or " Of course there's footage of those shows ,but good luck finding it." You get the picture, but I gots no video !!! Dad was a Very humble man and had No ego at all. When he was on the show, he was an actual star and I have tons of fan mail still and he would do all of the standard things like special appearances here & there, and he'd give interviews. Well, from what I understand, one interview was done by Popular Mechanics and Dad always answered all of the questions accurately, well, they asked all of the questions needed to patent Dads' ideas and the mechanism that held the strings attached to the pedals. So, Dad never owned this patent or the rights to his own ideas. I have no proof of this, but this is what Ive heard. All I really want to see in my life is Dad appearing on those shows, I think about it Every Day. My Family & I had seen all of the pictures, but there was Never Any Mention by Dad of actual recordings. Then, on Jan.24th 2005, 2 days after his 88th birthday, he got a call from God, thee ultimate bandleader in the sky. My Brother and I were downstairs because I was looking for pictures to show at the wake. We came across this box that we always remembered being under Dads' bed but we never opened it up or asked what was inside , so , this time, we opened it up. It was tied up with string. I looked inside and saw his 78 Rpm record from the Derby Label of St. Louie Blues & Limehouse Blues ,and the 45 RCA Victor of There's a small hotel & That da da strain, and though we had seen and heard these before, we hadn't heard them in years and they were in great condition too, so I immediately said " I'm getting these transferred onto a Cd and giving the Family a copy" , but then I kept looking in the box and I saw " CBS Studios, The Arthur Godfrey Show, Rico Turchetti, Caravan. And a bunch more. I was stunned, " Why didn't Dad ever tell us about these, I want to hear them NOW "!!!!
I play the drums and I was a professional musician in the Providence Federation Of Musicians when I was 16 years old and I had the pleasure of playing with Dad and all of his musician friends from the local for many years. People would ALWAYS comeup to Dad and ask if they knew him or that they recognized him or his name, but I was a kid and that wasn't a Star, that was Just My Dad, no big deal right ??? I eat that feeling every day now as I've grown into having an infinite amount of respect for the man and the musician. You never know what you've got until it's gone is SO true and I have a million questions for Dad when I see him again. So I went nuts trying to find a record player that played 78's so I could transfer these recordings to CD, but I never found one, Thank God because they would have been ruined and unplayable if I placed a modern diamond needle on those records. Turns out that they didn't use vinyl back then, they used acetate and you need to clean them up properly, use the correct type of needle, there special angles to the correct needle for different record manufacturers like Edison, the needle has to be the right weight or it can cut right through the 78... It was all too much to " Give it a try" because these records were priceless and there would only be ONE try. Luckily, thank God, a friend of Dads' said that he knew the procedures and would love to have the honor of doing it. I tested him, quizzed him, on all of the knowledge that I looked into about this "Proper" way to get it done and he passed every question and knew what he was doing , so I dropped off the records and he did them for me. Yes, it was VERY expensive, but nothing like those $250.00 an hour studios charge. I'm sure that they can be cleaned up better and better , but it cost me plenty and I'm pretty happy with the results as you'll hear on the Cd. Yes there are pops and hiss , but no skips and mostly , they're fine. The RCA recordings and Derby recordings were done in a studio and the quality is fine for the fidelity that they had back then, no pops , not too much hiss. I ,of course, don't even hear Anything except Dad and it sounds 100% perfect to me , no pops or hiss , just Dad. There are 19 songs on the Cd and I put some pictures in the jewel case cover. If anyone wants a copy, Email me
chris033@cox.net and I'll give you the details. I'm not making any real profit from these as I wouldn't want to make money off of my Fathers name and reputation, I have morals ,I'm really just covering my costs as I make them all myself, and keeping my Fathers memory alive. Thanx for reading and feel free to ask me any questions. I'll be posting more pictures too. Thanx again , Chris Turchetti.
