| Is anyone familiar with this fellow, Gordon Titcombe? I was in a "Cheap CD's" store the other day looking for banjo music and accidently (really) picked up an album called, "The Ballads of Madison County", which, yes, has to do with the book and movie (never saw it). I got to listen to the CD's I'd chosen before buying any, and was SOOOO glad I ran across this one. It's excellent in every way and the little book in the CD cover has all the lyrics and info you could want. The steel guitar is played on every song and it's really beautiful. What a find! The singer is Robert Waller, writer of the book, and he's something else, almost sounds a little Celtic. Anyway, I was just wondering if anybody knows about the steel player on this CD. |

| I have known Gordon for many years, and I'm pleased to say he is a friend.. He is a multi talented and many faceted musician and producer. He is a generous and gracious colleague, a killer steel player, and one of the funniest guys I know. Check out his website.. If you get a chance to hear him, you should go. |

| Doug and John, Thanks for the good information about this fellow and for his Web site. I'll definitely visit it. Joey, The CD literature spells his name with an 'E' so that's the way I spelled it. Thanks for the correction. He is truly a great Steel player and I LOVE this album. |

Gordon is an incredible player... and a member of this forum. Hopefully he will "chime" in shortly!
He plays great steel on Bill Keith's 'Beating Around the Bush' album. Killer versions of "Don't Let You Deal Go Down" and the instrumental "Cherokee Shuffle"... this is one b@njo album well worth tracking down. |

Thanks SO much for posting the link to his samples. If anybody wants to hear the Titcomb Steel go to "Idaho Rain". All the samples are pretty short but ya gotta hear some of these...Blue suspenders, Girl from the North Country, Golden Apples, The Dutchman, the first song.... I think the Steel Guitar is in all of them. Good golly, ALL OF THE SONGS ARE WONDERFUL! The Review is interesting too.

Hello Everyone,
Thank you all for your kind words....they're truly appreciated!
That Madison County album was interesting...I got a call to do the session from my old friend Eric Weissberg...got to the studio and we all just winged it as Atlantic Records was very anxious to get the album A.S.A.P. My recollection is that we cut the entire album in one day....I think that we did about two takes per song, everything live and no overdubs except when a second instrument was needed.
It was more like a drive-by shooting than a master session....but it was fun none the less!
