Scott:It should alright as a carry on as long as the effects unit fits under the seat in front of you,but they will let you put it in the overhead bin,If you're nice to them,The picks, and bar should not be a problem.Stu |

...and of course, leave and arrive at the airport EARLY with plenty of time to spare, just-in-case you have some extensive explaining to do with regard to the effects unit.

Scott -- I have actually been stopped by security for my bar ... they couldn't figure out what it was and thought it looked like a bullet. After that happening twice, I now take it out of my carry-on bag and put it in the bin with my jacket and phone to go through the x-ray machine so they know I'm not hiding anything -- that seems to work really well.
A funny story. I got stopped for the bar one-time and the security people were really concerned because it looked so much like a big bullet. I kept trying to explain what it was ... to no avail. They brought over a few other security people who were equally confused and wary. Finally, the security guard said he would have to take it back to his supervisor. He came back a few minutes later with a grin on his face and said, "I won't even tell you what my supervisor said it looked like!" With that, he let me through. I should have told him it was a "marital aid" from the beginning! Boo |

You might want to bring a snapshot of you playing a steel, with the bar clearly visable.

Skip,
Most certainly a clever terrorist would have thought of photoshopping himself playing steel guitar.

I check mine in my baggage. Certainly there is a risk there, but I figure the more significant risk is being denied at the gate check point and having to surrender my bar.
The screeners can be pretty busy at times, and there may not always be a supervisor available to make a judgement call. Conversly, there may be a supervisor available who rules with an iron fist. The screeners probably don't have much of an incentive to let suspicious objects on given if they make a mistake the consequences are obvious. I don't want to risk failing the bar exam at the gate, particularly if some unexpected event that day triggers a higher level of security.

Went to Germany, and carried on my Lexcon MPX100 in my small overnight bag.......when it went thru the X-ray they pulled me aside, to this little office and made me show it to em and explain what it was. When they were sure it was not a Bomb...they let me board!!!!
