Who did the steel on this classic Stonewall Jackson piece? Loved the tune since I first heard in circa 1964... The steel always stops me in my tracks.

The steel guitarist on "A Wound Time Can't Erase" was Bill Johnson. Bill Johnson played steel for Marty Robbins. Johnson wrote "Wound" as a staff writer for Marty's publishing company.

The time cards reads Sept 6, 1961. Bradley Film & Recording. 804 16th Avenue South Nashville TN. Producers Don Law & Frank Jones. Stonewall Jackson, vocal & guitar. Harold Ray Bradley, guitar. Thomas Grady Martin, guitar & leader. William Donald Johnson, steel guitar. Roy M. "Junior" Husky, bass. Willaim Paul Ackerman, drums. William Whitney "Bill" Purcell, piano.

The song reached #3 in Billboard in 1962 and remains one of Stonewall's most requested songs

I used to see Bill around town once in a while, and I seem to remember him telling me that his wife (Moneen?) was a writer on "A Way To Survive."

Robert, I owe you one big thanks. I was just woodsheddin' to that tune last night and figured it was time to ask... Dug out the "Best of Stonewall Jackson" CD and played along with "Wound", "Don't be angry with me Darlin'", and several others, but "A wound time cain't erase" is really one of the top tunes of all time.

Cal, That's right. "A Way To Survive" was written by Moneen Carpenter & Hank Cochran. Tree Pub. 1966. Ray & Dave, You might check your local T.V. schedule for a PBS show on Marty Robbins called "Seems Like Yesterday." Bill Johnson is playing a black D-10 Emmons on some of the clips.
