Stumbled on this old video of Barbara Mandrell playing and singing effortlessly with the PSG.
She is something else!

Well Joe (and Mike), my short answer is that I simply don't believe she's done a lot for the steel guitar world.

The nomination form for the S.G.H.O.F. outlines <u>7</u> "criteria" as a basis for a nomination. If I really (and I mean really) stretch it, I can see where she fits, or has qualifications, in 2 or 3 of those criteria.

Quite simply, (I feel) it's the highest award we, as a community, can bestow. And to me, it takes more than just being a good player (and having a steel player in your band) to deserve it.

I am not a particular fan of Barbara but it seems to me that in additon to playing a nice steel, she has certainly:
1) Brought the steel to the forefront as she used to play it often on her TV show
2) I am always enthralled with anyone who can sing effortlessly while playing the steel-that is a major accomplishment!
3)She must be one of the all time most talented people in music ever as i think she can play essentially every instrument-
(I read once that Bobby Darin and Aretha Franklin could play every instrument in an orchestra but I doubt they could play the steel)

Have seen Barbara Mandrell playing steel (and
saxophone at the same time) in 1960 at "Townhall Party" in Compton CA on live TV (ch11) 11 ears old and totally relaxed.
With me she has been sesation ever since.
Ofcours,with all the differend things she does
(and probebly has to do), steelguitar has not
been in foreground as much as us steelers would
like.

When I was in the Marines in the mid 60's, Barbara Mandrell's Dad owned a music store in Osceanside,just out the gate of Camp Pendleton. The Mandrell's, as they were then called, played many gigs at the EM club. As a steel player,I naturally went to hear them. I was knocked out by Barbara's playing. I later went to the music store, as was fortunate enough to get to know her a little, and talk steel as well. at that time, she had a Wright custom. I later saw her on a Far East tour, at a club on Okinawa. She was tearing up some of those Jimmy Day instumentals from "Golden steel guitar hits" and was was very gracious to say she remembered me, even if she didn't. Whether or not she belongs in the SGHOF I can't say, but she's the real deal, a nice lady, and a terrific picker.
