Norm Hamlet for the HOF!
What do you say?
I understand that a well-prepared nomination has been submitted to the committee and I want to publicly thank whoever is responsible for that.
I can think of no player more deserving. Let’s face it, steel guitar players are famous only among steel guitar players and well known, at best, among other (country) musicians. Those Strangers albums, with many original Norm Hamlet/ Roy Nichols compositions are still in demand today among musicians. I’ve lost track of the Merle Haggard albums Norm has played on since the mid-60’s. Merle titled an album, “My 30th Album” back in 1974. Norm had probably played on half of those albums. And that was over 30 years and God only knows how many recordings, road miles and concerts ago!
So I’m sure that many of us who still read musician credits on CD’s look forward to the day when Norm Hamlet takes his place among his peers in the Steel Guitar HOF.

I am very glad that Norm is finally getting the recognition that he deserves. Many may not know, but Norm has been playing professionally since he was in High School. This has been his lifes work, and you will never hear him brag about it. He is a very kind, soft spoken, great player. It has been a pleasure knowing him for over forty years. Wow, I didn't realize that Norm was not in the HOF. He should have been there long ago.
Norm, I proudly support your induction into the Hall of Fame. .............. JD

Right, Joe. This year's picks were made long ago. The Board meets each year during the convention to select the inductee(s) for the following year. Thus, the timeliness of this thread.
Nobody said that Norm was not nominated last year. So I go to Scotty's again this year with hope that it will be Norm's year.
I would draw many parallels between Norm's career and that of two Hall of Famers -- Hughey and Moon. Both did a lot of top session work, a lot of major touring, and in later years a lot of steel shows. Norm's man, Haggard, has kept the road show going for so long now that Norm hasn't had the openings to do many shows. But we've got him this year again at Scotty's and that's fantastic.

Norm has been on the road some 30 years and he is doing around 200 shows each year with Merle Haggard so the math says 6000 shows. He can play the Robro [dobro] well too! He told me his first guitar was a Dobro and he liked whats his name that played with whats his name on the grand Ole Oppra!!! Long live the walbash cannion ball!!

Seems like a very good idea to me, no question he has paid his dues for sure.
