Well, it was a pretty good show for late night TV, but the music was not so impressive. The singing is a new tack for RR, so I'm willing to give him time to develop it. It is very difficult to sing and play steel, and very few people try to do it. He is trying to front the entire group both on vocals and steel. His vocals didn't come through quite strong enough - probably the sound techs fault. And his steel had so much distortion and compression it didn't cut through the mix well. His playing was more on the wild emotional side, intonation be damned, and didn't show the technical brilliance he is capable of. In his defense, he is trying to excite the young pop and urban music audience, so maybe his style was right for them. Also, it is dang hard to be technically brilliant on steel while leading a high energy vocal. So I think the jury is still out on his new direction, but it is certainly to his credit to try to take steel in that direction, and I sure wish him all the success in the world. Broadening the audience for steel can only be a good thing in the long run. |

I thought it was more of a sound effect than "steel playing" - you could have played the same thing on a slide guitar or even a standard guitar, just slide up the neck and blare some noise, repeat as necessary. I don't think the market he's aiming at (or aimed at) requires instrumental proficiency - he seems to be regressing. I don't think it's his fault, exactly, it's just that "talent" and "entertainment" have become diametrically opposed. |

It was listed on one of the forums that RR would play on Conan BEFORE it came on. Maybe you missed it.
