When one purchases a musical instrument...and remits the full amount by overnight mail......by bank check.........

WHAT is considered to be a "reasonable" and "ethical" amount of time for the seller to ship said purchase?

Just curious....... eBay seems to be quite vague, as far as I can tell and was just wondering "what is the norm"???? or is there one?

Hi Ray, most eBay sellers I've delt with are good about shipping a sold item as soon as payment is confirmed by whichever method of shipping you agree to. Then again, I've had a seller or two that I thought should have jumped on it a little bit quicker. I just bought a Gibson Console Grande and paid for it with Paypal, as soon as the transaction was cleared and completed the seller shipped my guitar the next day. To me that's the way it should be done.

Ray, unfortunately everyone has their opinion of the word "reasonable." When someone purchases something from me I try to get it out the day after receiving the payment. However, some people don't see a priority to be expeditous in shipping out merchandise and ship once a week. It also depends upon if you are dealing with a business or an individual on ebay. If the party doesn't ship within a week I would certainly be contacting them.

When someone buys a steel guitar from me, if they pay by money order or cashiers check, I usually get it off to them the next day, Like others I do accept personal checks, but it does take about 15 days for them to clear the bank, then we ship the guitar. I have never had a problem with anyone for taking too long to act on a shipment.

If your seller is going to quote you "actual shipping charges" rather than a flat fee, you need to allow time for a trip to the shipper to have the thing weighed and an actual price determined...which might mean a Saturday trip for a private seller.

Also, you need to allow the seller time to get the check to HIS bank. Just because it's a "bank chack" doesn't mean it doesn't need to be checked, and again, private sellers may not be able to get to a bank during weekday hours easily.

I give sellers...unless it's a business...7 working days before I start sending "pushy" emails. But I would expect the seller to communicate in that time period what's going on.

OTOH, I use flat shipping/handling rates (that really cover only the cost of shipping and part of packing materials), only take Paypal, and ship in 1-2 days.
