So what's the big deal? You can hear it for yourself and see if it's real or hype. National Public Radio, www.npr.com did an 18 minute full feature piece this morning on Robert Randolph and his music. You can pull it up in Real Player from their archives.

You asked for a positve showcase for our instrument, here is a great answer. Good Job Robert!

Thanks for posting that link. I've been waiting to hear Robert. He definately has it going on. I'm sure there are some in the steel guitar world that will not appreciate what he is doing, but I think most will.
He really has great tone and energy. It sounds as if he is morfing 6 string guitar with pedal steel. His tone and phrasing remind me of the great musicians I used to hear in the black churches in my hometown of Lackawanna, N.Y. Most of the guitar players there used an open tuning and had that biting, vocal tone. his lower register is nice and clear too. looking foward to the appearance on Conan Tuesday.

Seems like once in awhile the Good Lord really smiles on someone. What a tallent and what a great ambasador for the PSG. I sure never heard anybody make it sound like Robert and its bound to bring the PSG into a more mainstream position. Way to go Robert!

I saw him at a little club here in Boston (oh, okay Somerville) a couple months ago. As great as he plays, his showmanship was AMAZING. He had the crowd in the palm of his hand. He's got a stage presence that is almost hard to imagine is possible while playing steel.

Hang on. This reminds me of one of my early six-string lessons. My teacher took out a new LP and said, "Here's a new guy, reinventing the rules."

That's the first time I heard Jimi Hendrix.

Here's a link to the NPR interview: http://www.npr.org/programs/wesun/features/2001/aug/robertrandolph/010805.robertrandolph.html

That's fabulous! I gotta see this guy. He is
HOT, HOT, HOT! I can see where this guy is going to do more for steel guitar than anyone has in a long, long, while. Hey, Seymour, you better stock up on guitars like he is playing!

BTW, Robert Randolph plays a 13 string Fessenden similar to the one Jerry just built for me, but Robert's is purple!

What are the chances of him playing at St. Louis? It would be a SHAME if he wasn't invited..............

Tony: I am not sure if Robert Randolph will be playing at St. Louis this year ... However, there will be a very talented Sacred Steel player -- often referred to as the "Buddy Emmons of Sacred Steel" -- named Chuck Campbell present at St. Louis this year, I do believe. While I'm not aware of Chuck Campbell being invited to play the main stage this year, Chuck says he will be jammin' in the Carter booth off and on from Friday sometime through Saturday (has to leave very early Sunday to get to a Church service in Rochester NY on Sunday morning). So be sure to stop by our booth to hear Chuck Campbell jam if you wish. St. Louis Schedule thread.

Back to Robert Randolph: I just received this from his management team:

quote:

Robert Randolph will be performing with THE WORD tonight on "Late Night With Conan O'Brian", which airs at 12:30am on NBC Television, TODAY, August 7, 2001. Stay up late or set your VCR's to see Robert's national TV debut...

And, ... the September edition of Esquire magazine has an excellent three page interview with Robert that's well worth reading...

Here's a bump for this NPR broadcast about Randolph and sacred steel.

One of my favourite parts is at 8 minutes 30 seconds in, where he demonstrates a marvelous fluency in country, rock and sacred styles.

Positively fantastic. And he's a wonderful spokesman for the instrument. Wish there were a few more like him.
