Well, the singer is Buck Owens, but I'll be damned if I know who the steeler is. I know it AIN'T Ralph Mooney,Jay McDonald,Tom Brumley,or Jerry Brightman. Since this looks like one of those old "hillbilly parks",& the time period being 1961,it could've been the "house band" steeler. Perhaps Buck had not formed the traveling "Buckaroos" yet. Who knows, maybe he was still travlling under the pseudonym,"Corky Jones". Image

Brett,
I never thought of that but,yer right,it does kinda resemble J.P. I remember him always being a fair steeler. I did a short tour w/ him, back in the late 60's,& he always did wanna pick on my steel. How 'bout it Jack? Would dat be J.P.,a/k/a/ Donny Young?

I know one thing: That's an ElectroVoice 664 microphone Buck's singing into! Image

I had a couple, you could hammer a nail into the stage with one, then put it on the stand and sing through it.

This pic was taken around the time Buck had no band. Donny and I and sometimes Jim Crawford worked the Ohio area pre Jones. Adams Bros.period. I have some other pics I'll post if I can, with Buck, Don Rich, D young, J crawford and myself at Frontier Ranch.

I believe that our Jerry Hendrix was playing with Buck Owens in Bakersfield around that time. He is Still at it, playing very fine steel guitar...al Image

No one mentioned the steel he was playing? sure looks like a Fender 400 I worked some shows with Buck in 1960 when I was living in Tucson Az. I was playing my 1957 Sho-Bud at the time, Donny Young borrowed my guitar in 1958 when he played the the Flame Cafe in Minneapolis with George Jones! Al Udeen

Steve H.,

Listening to the last part of that steel intro, I'd swear it was Lloyd. I'm interested to know if I thought wrong.

Cody-do you have that record?I have a REALLY bad mp3 of it...the record must have been in terrible condition!I'd sure love to have a good clean mp3 of it...I asked Melba who it was...she told me she had"Buddy on some things,Hal on some things..."it is DEFINITELY a Sho~Bud,and features the'broken-glass tone' that I love so much from that era...Lloyd could get that tone too,though...maybe he'll see this and enlighten us...regardless of who played steel,I believe that is about the most high-powered girl-singing I have ever heard! What label was that record on anyway?
