City with live bands??

Post by Wally Maples »

I want to spend a couple of months in/near a city with live REAL country bands with STEEL in honky tonks. Does that exist anywhere today? Except Nashville (I live near there). Perhaps in Texas?? Thanks Wally

Come to Austin, Tx. I promise you will get to see and hear some good steel playing.

Strangely, Chicago has a growing number of honky tonk bands, at least four of which have steady weekly (or more) gigs, and at least one great western swing band. There are a couple serious steel players here, too. We've got Brian Wilkie and Ken Champion, just to name two, but there are quite a few great players, and up and coming players here. We seem to have a lot of younger guys taking it up here, which is were I fall in the mix.

There are lots of strong players in and around San Antonio. Austin is only an hour away and there is another strong group of steelers there. There are good steel players all over Texas.

Thanks Roger. I spent some time in San Antone around '45 and look forward to going again. I think I'll take a couple months and do all the big Texas towns. Sounds great.

If you happen to be in Ft.Worth on any Tuesday Night,Our group "Country Night Live" plays from 7:30 to 11:30 at The Finish Line Club ( I-30 @ Link Crest ) and its COUNTRY. No top 40 music or Rock N Roll, just the good stuff.
