Today is Jerry's birthday. Happy birthday to a departed soul who, love him or hate him, did a lot in his limited steel career to expose people to the instrument who otherwise may have totally ignored it....and inspired many, many players through one simple, but effective solo.
What a long strange trip it's been.... |

I figured that was the most appropriate "tie-in" line to post here than anything else. |

Happy Birthday Big Guy! You're my favorite over-rated steel guitar player.
Jerry has brought so much happiness to so many people; simply thru his passion for creating and spreading MUSIC! Like some other prople whe know. Some folks are so all over the place they cannot help become an icon. Love 'em or hate em.
Here's to you Jerry, today we celebrate! |

Teach Your Children was played at the CSN&Y concert last night at the Hollywood Bowl. Unfortunately the steel work was uninspired, but it was good hearing them again.
The last time I heard them was at Woodstock.

And who might this "uninspiring" steeler be? |

Apparently they are referring to Ben Keith. |

Happy 65th(?) BD JG. Every summer it really hits home that we can't go out and see you play anymore. We sure miss ya. We've been celebrating your birthday since a little after 4pm today.

Yes in memory of Jerry, who made so many happy
over the years.
Jim,
forumite Dean Parks, I believe, is the CSNY steeler.
A formidable guitarist,
he has been playing steel a very short period of time.
Just long enough for CSNY to say,
yeah play here, etc.
His steel playing will no doubt grow with time.
If you heard his guitar picking,
then you get the idea of what he is capable of.
He has been with C & N for quite some time,
and this new tour I believe he is on.[This message was edited by David L. Donald on 01 August 2006 at 07:49 PM.] |

Well, I don't know then about who really IS the steel player for CSNY right now- all I did was "repeat what they said in the paper"- the show they played in Concord last week here in the Bay Area. and THAT reviewer said it was Ben Keith. Well, what do I know? I haven't seen them on this latest tour (& don't plan on it-
Neil hasn't had much to say to me poetically for years & years now, & the only one I really all-around enjoy as a player now is Stills). Well, whatever- don't try & quote me as bein'the expert, because where CSNY are involved, I am truly out of the loop now.
This would have been Jerry's 64th birthday (yesterday)- & it would have been nice if he had made it to be here w/ us all, but the Universe had other plans. |

Neil's been letting his guitars do most of the talking for a long time and if it wasn't so killer I'd be even more pissed about his political silence (minus his newie) as I am with most everybody elses when it's really needed, again.
Hope you're RIP JG. |

I recently picked up an Ebay CD from "The Guitar Trio" - it's the newer, 1996 collaboration between Paco De Lucia, John McLaughlin and Al Di Meola. My first impression was, Paco is playing Jerry Garcia guitar licks! Well, possibly, he derived them from a different source, but that clean, happy, melodic style, straight to the point with nary a sidestep or wasted note - I better dig out "Dick's Picks vol. 10" (Winterland, 12/29/77) and have a little festival here.... |

Hey Ron--the CSN&Y site has a whole lot of photos from the current tour. They show some significant political content being projected onto the set. May only be during that one song--can't tell.
I accept onstage political content if it's part of the art. But I don't demand it of anyone---reminds me too much of the days when Bob Dylan was being hounded by a creep named AJ Weberman who was going thru Dylan's garbage and publishing all sorts of harassing crap---all in the name of "The Bob Dylan Liberation Front"---a pseudo-activist movement comnplaining about Dylan's abandonment of protest songs in favor of his great 61 Revisited, Blond on Blond period of love & whatever songs (his golden age, IMO). Anyway, bottom line--don't follow leaders. And for the love of god, watch your parking meters.
And Yo, Jerry! |

Political content in music these days just makes me cringe. It doesn't matter which side of the spectrum it comes from- it just doesn't
seem to me like what music is really THERE for.
for me anyway. It makes me want to run away someplace and stick my head in a bucket of sand- as though it's become oexpected of people, or, someone you can;t get into unless you can dig their politics.
there's plenty of great stuff of Neil's I love, but I've always been a resister when it comes to the general trend (CSNY are no exception) of folks who use their stage for
an outside agenda.
Really, I am as apolitical as Jerry was, if not more so. |
