I caught Robert's show in Atlanta last week. He opened for the Black Crowes. The Drive-By Truckers were the first act, and they had a steel also. Anyone know who that steeler was?

I missed the show but, the pictures of it in the local paper and reviews showed the packed house and the joint was jumping. RR's pedal steel was at the front of the stage...young hotties dancing all around him.. This guitar looked like a Franklin single, the front apron had two colored blocks like PF's steels.. and the words PRESS ON inlaid |

Never seen Robert play before but these clips show ya once more that the Pedal Steel Guitar can be used for all different kinds of music. Not that I like it but thats personal.
I think that the music he is playing has nothing to do with C&W.Just the way that he is using the PSG shows me that his roots are still in C&W.One of those Sacred Steel Players that made it.
Jerry Brightman is one of those players that is seeing lots of perspective for the PSG.Just listen to his cd's.There is a lot more to the steel guitar then we know of.

The steel player with the Driveby Truckers might have been John Neff from the Japancakes. He was on the last track of the new DBT album "Blessing and a Curse" and I think he played live with them a few times since then.
There is a nice article about John Neff here: http://flagpole.com/Weekly/5376

I just finished watching the clip"Voodoo Child". Me being a dyed in the wool country picker and a "hack" at best, I noticed some interesting things, [interesting to me anyway] First off RR is playing a Fessy, looks like a 14 stringer, but I heard some where it has 13 strings. He's using a thumb pick and two finger picks like most of us, his right hand moves from picking just in front of the changer to about two inches in front of the pick up. He's using a Shubb Pierse bar and several times I noted forward bar slants, and however it is tuned allowed him to make some very vicious thumb rakes accross those bottom strings, in a couple of places I saw and heard finger rolls and notes that would scare the daylights out of these wannabe Tele shredders. I also notice in the camera shots from behind you can see RR using his left pedals along with some heavy foot stomping.
So I've come to the conclusion that this young man has some very definate sounds and moves he looking for, not just random noise.
If he ever gets within driving distance I will definatly go see him.
These are just my thoughts and opinions! Yours may vary.
Now I've gotta go see if any of those notes are on my "Fessy"
edited to add, I also noticed RR was not wearing blue jeans with holes in the knees, and a dirty torn Tee shirt and a cowboy hat that looked like it had been stomped in the Bull chutes!

My next door neighbor's son is in the Navy and plays a little guitar. He went to a RR concert last month and got a little happy, so he jumped up on the stage. Instead of having security throw him off stage, Robert gave him a spare guitar they had on stage, told him the song was in Am, and let him play with them for a while. I didn't believe it until I saw pictures that his friends took...
I don't know about the wisdom of doing that, but RR has a fan for life.
