What has the Forum done for you?

Post by Kevin Hatton »

This Forum is a tremendous data base of steel guitar info. Because of it:
1) I play my dream rig and get the exact sound that I searched for years.
2) I learned to play in tune and to use my ears more than a tuning meter thanks to Paul Franklin and Ricky Davis. I learned that every steel guitar has to be tuned to it self.
3) Tom Brumley in the Buckaroos.
This forum has made me a much better player and I find interesting even the points of view that I disagree with. Thanks Bobby Lee. How bout you?

Lately it's been boring me to tears, but that's only 'cause it's been invaluable since I signed on, and I'm still finding great things in the archives.

It:
-convinced me to start playing steel
-showed me where to buy one (Bobbe)
-helped me learn licks, solos, etc (Ricky)
-helped me make new friends

And the list goes on. This is a great resource for new players like myself as I'm sure it is for you seasoned players too...thanks b0b!

What has the forum done for me?? NOTHING, except it has peeled years off the quest to learn the insrument. I have met many fine friends, and have learned volumes about shobud guitars. I also know what events are coming up and where. How about "support concerning how to do anything steel related"?? ALL BECAUSE OF THE FORUM!! Thanx again, b0b. Image

There are too many other cool things to say, but I'll save some for some one else to say! HA!!)

It has turned me into a hopeless pedal steel junkie. Before I discovered the forum, I had a crappy steel and didn't even practice between gigs. I couldn't care less about it. I didn't even break it down between gigs - I just chucked it in the car and left it there. I hardly ever changed the strings, and it was falling apart. I had no interest in it, other than the fact that it was bringing me steady gig work despite knowing about 10 licks. I didn't know anything about tempered tuning, cabinet drop, grips, rolls, blocking, copedents, half-stops, changers, etc. I knew this thing had 10 strings and the pedals and levers did cool stuff. I largely figured it out on my own, woth a few pointers from other players here and there. I was basically a steel guitar nomad on an island in the middle of the cold Atlantic ocean.

Now I have a very nice Carter D-10, pac seat, Peterson tuner, Goodrich LDR volume pedal, $60 tone bar, DD-3, Nashville 112 on the way, Session 400........and way less to deposit into my bank account after a gig. I hardly get any sleep because I'm rabid for learning new licks and runs. (Thanks, Don....inside joke.) And when I'm not gigging or practicing, I'm staring at pictures of steel guitars and trying to figure out ways to buy another one.

I always ask myself, "Was I better off before?" Na........

The Forum has been invaluable to all of us steelers throughout the world...it doesn't matter where you are with your talent and ability..all are welcome here in this big family.

I have no doubt that b0b didn't invision it geeting as large as it has, and effecting us as it has...my thanx to b0b and all of the fine folks that work with him.

I still say that NO ONE has done as much for this community and for this instrument as b0b and he should be in the Hall of Fame for his contribution...IMHO

Well, the Forum's been really good to me because when I first started playing steel, I made so many wonderful friends and learned a lot about this beautiful instrument called the steel guitar through the Forum itself. I'm so glad to be a part of the steel guitar family, and what's really amazing is, every steel guitarist I've met understands my determination to play the steel guitar even with cerebral palsy. To the steel guitar forum and community, I love y'all! Amen to that, Jack. By creating this forum, b0b has made one of the biggest contrbutions of all time to the world of steel guitar, IMO. The wealth of knowledge being passed around here is astronomical.

When I discovered the Forum in 1999 it fueled a renewed interest in steel which has not abated. It was stuff I read on the Forum that persuaded me that I should go to the ISGC that year. With the help of the Forum I have made many new friends all over the place. I can play stuff that I once thought would forever be beyond my skill level.

I'm looking forward to seeing a bunch of people who I consider to be good friends in St. Louis next month. I don't believe that would be happening for me without the Forum.

Sure, after this many years things get repetitive, and sometimes I get bored and/or irritated by some stuff I read, but I still find a wealth of interesting stuff here.

And all for a $5 membership fee! To help b0b out, I think we could all afford a $5, at least, annual subscription.
Cheers.

The Forum gives you steel fever.
Maybe I should say what the Forum has done to me.

The Steel Forum has been a God sent blessing to me. I've gone through some real tough times the last few years and the steel forum helped me to learn about my dad's career and it was invaluable to me in finding friends of my dad's who are now friends of mine. My opinions don't really matter a great deal here because I'm a greenhorn wannabe steeler but that doesn't matter because this place makes me feel close to my dad even though he's gone to be with the Lord now. One of these days I hope to be able to pay b0b back for the blessings the forum have given me.

I agree with Mark. I have learned many things about the steel I did not know and have made many friends, even though some I have never met in person. I cannot put a price on this forum and once again bOb deserves so much respect.

The Forum has provided me with Links that I've used in my research for my guitar - that coupled with the Search area, verified my selection of not only my guitar, but my amplifier as well.

The Forum provides a source for quality items like strings. (Thanks, b0b, just finished installing them yesterday).

The Search area is the one place I spend most of my time. Since I'm new and have a LOT of questions, I do not post questions here; I check using the Search area --- my questions have all been asked before and I can find answers using Search. I was in need of a good theory book; did my research and found Edly's "Music Theory for Practical People" recommended - I purchased it.

Thanks' b0b

It is like going to your local music store where you can visit with your musician friends about everything from gear to gigs. The difference is, your friends live all over the world. You can communicate with the legends, meet up & coming legends, learn about "the road", hear stories about the old days on the road and just get a great deal of support from others that share a common love of the most complex and rewarding instrument ever invented.

Other than that, it is a complete waiste of the two or more hours that I spend on it every day.

For years I've been sitting here, out in the bundus, frustrated because no-one to talk to about the steel and its music. Now I've also met some wonderful people and made new friends. Hats off to BoB.

The forum has been a huge education. It put me in contact with local steelers like Larry Bell and Joe Wright.

The forum also has been a boon to the steel guitar biz.

Thanks, b0b.
