I have heard several songs on Steelradio.com by Leon that are gospel. Does anybody know if these are on either of the tapes b0b has available. If not, what is the title of the recording that contains the songs. They are playing.
Thanks

I don't know about your specific query, but Leon played my 3-neck Custom on more than one occasion rather than haul his quad up the stairs to the bandstand. Leon was an experienced and talented musician who could adapt to whatever the performance situation required.
Leon was like many musicians who lived to see others attempt to "improve" on his innovations...but, when the rubber meets the road, the one important fact remains that....He did it first!

James:
Shortly before he passed away, Leon released an LP entitled "Take It Away, Lord". As far as I know, it has never appeared on CD and I have no idea if that is what you are hearing on the radio, but as I recall it is just gospel tunes.

Leon's playing was the reason the rest of us had to resort to pedals. |

Thanks for the bump and the comments about Leon. I saw him on TV when I was a kid. My dad said he directed his band with the steel. He said there were phrases Leon would play to tell the other instruments to take a lead. Don't know if that is true, but to a 9 or 10 year old, it should made my Dad sound smart. Maybe I can find the "Take it Away Lord" recording somewhere.

Yes, the gospel tunes are from an album titled, Take It Away Lord. It was provided to us via Jack Hamlett. He received a copy of the album from a woman (Genelle I believe) who played music with Leon in his later years. Here are two links to her website. You may be able to contact her and find out if the album is available and/or how to get it.

Jack Hamlett and his father are working on a project - history of the steel guitar - and many of the tracks they have acquired have been given to SteelRadio.
Sorry for the delay in responding but I wanted to verify the album title before I posted.
Thanks for the inquiry and thanks for tuning in!

You are so right Gene. I thought, years ago, that I played The One Rose real pretty like and then I saw Leon at the Cimarron Ballroom and he did a reverse slant on the word "heart" in the first line and made the song more beautiful than ever. I have been using that slant for years now thanks to Leon. CC |

Thanks Lana, I will check that out. My band can so a pretty decent job on steel guitar rag, but we primarily play country gospel and I told them about Leon's gospel version and now they want to hear it and learn to do it. They will also like "Just Playing for the Lord"
