I am basically a country picker on the steel
(I like Lloyd Green, Buddy Emmons,John Hughey,Paul Franklin,Rusty Young, Doug Jernigan, etc)but I also play some jazz and classical music on the steel.Recently have been attempting to play my own transcription of a Scarlatti keyboard sonata on the steel. Anyone else out there interested in classical music on the steel?

Thanks Lee. I should hire you to be my publicist.

I am not the first steel player to do this. Marshall Hall released an LP of classical music played on the steel back in the 70's. And of course Buddy Emmons did the
"taco bell" canon on his white album, and B.J. Cole's "Transparent Music" CD (available from the forum catalog) contains some classical pieces.

Also both Hal Rugg and Lloyd Green have perfromed classical pieces at the convention.

I also want to mention our fellow forumite and my personal hero, Doug "Ernest Bovine" Livingstone, who recorded Sasha Matson's concerto for steel guitar and string orchestra. Unfortunately that composition and CD really doesn't show what either Doug or the steel can do. But aside from that, Doug can play Bach and Mozart on the steel as well as he can play the way to survive.

Doug, if you're reading this. Please record a CD of this stuff. the world needs to hear what you can do and how well you can do it.

Back in the early nineties I did a transcription for the steel of the short second movement of Mendelssohn's Sonata for organ in A major,op.65 no.3(about two and a half minutes)

Hello Mike S.

I have worked a few Chopin compositions.
This one is E9th. I recorded this clip two years ago and plan to do it again sometime soon. Lovely chords! http://freefilehosting.net/?id=pdDyk6TY

Hi, Mike. I see someone linked you to Mike Perlowin's work. To me, his work is classical, yet completely original. I've never heard anything so beautiful. Firebird Suite is an exotic garden of sound. In West Side Story, he brings elements out of Bernstein that no one else has on any instrument. Wow. It's like Mike P. found this portal to another, glorious universe.

That universe has a name. It's called "psychosis."

I also attempt to play classical music on the steel when I can. I often use choral arrangements.

I have a classical composition background and have one Britten cello piece transcribed on my cd.

I play Bach for my own enjoyment when I have the time.

Doug Livingstone sent me a recording he had done of the Chaconne fron Bach's Partita #2 in D minor for solo violin, one of my all time favorite pieces of music. I play it on electric six-string, but I had made some comment to the effect that it probably couldn't be played on steel. HA! My dumb. I can sort of see why he hasn't released it, there were a few rough moments, but the talent to even play it that well is ridiculous.

I would love to see him whip up an album, I too have the Sasha Matson CD and it's clear the composer greatly underestimated the steel's potential. The violins get all the good licks and the steel just sort of floats around instead of vice-versa, which seems sort of dumb for a steel guitar concerto.

Seems I remember Doug Jernigan doing some classical steel CDs in the '70s?
