Yowza! That was fun.....two questons: what kind of guitar is he playing (Jimmy Page eat yer heart out), and what is she doing with her elbow? The boo-wah sound seems to be timed with some elbow dipin' action. So cool.

Joe is playing a double-neck Mosrite...it's a Mosrite Custom to be exact. The bottom neck is a normal guitar neck & the top is an octave neck.

Marian, of course, is playing a wonderful Bigsby steel.

The video once again shows why Joe Maphis is the man!!!

When they booked Joe at the Barrel House in Bakersfield in the early seventies, he hung that Mosrite around my neck, it seemed as heavy as a D-10, almost. He told me to play a boogie on the bottom neck. I'm average height, and he reached his arms over my shoulders and played harmony on the top neck. That's something he did most places he worked with a house band. He was incredibly fast and clean, and he and Rosalie were very nice people.

That video brings back some wondeful memories of when I was a kid... My dad took me to Town Hall Party in Compton, Calif. a number of times and it was always a great show. Merle Travis was also a regular on the show. Can you imagine a show with Joe and Merle both on the same stage. Joe always had such a great tone and Marian's was excellent. The lady fiddler on the video was "Fiddlin' Kate". I don't remember her last name. The show featured people like Les "CarrotTop" Anderson who was used as a vocalist but is (was) a fine steel guitarist in his own right. Someone mentioned Joe playing on the top neck of his guitar while he played the bottom neck. Joe and Larry Collins used to do a thing like that where Joe would walk up behind Larry and play on the top neck while Larry did the regular neck. Joe and Merle Travis used to do this thing where they'd stand together and they'd each pick their own guitars but fret the neck of the other's guitar. It was quite a sight to see (and hear). I remember when I was in high school most of my friends would be out on Saturday night but I'd be in front of the TV watching KTTV Channel 11 at 8:00 PM to see Town Hall Party and then go out after that.... I sure miss those good old live shows, they're just not around anymore.....JH in Va.

Jerry-

It was quite an era wasn't it. Fun, wholesome entertainment that represented all that was good. Remember the Hometown Jamboree, and the Melody Ranch programs too?

Is the lovely Rose Lee still alive?

that clip is from Tex Ritter's Rockin the Ranch DVD from Stompertme Records in the UK.

the steeler is our recently passed away Marian Hall. she plays two other solo on hat DVD, one with a young George Jones and one of the Town Hall regulars, Les "Carrot Top' Anderson.

Joe Maphis is an amazing player. so fluid and on top of the whole show.

Hey Gary H....Yeah, I remember the old Hometown Jamboree very well as I've been there too. Just think, Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant in a band together! Also another great guitarist Billy Strange was on the show which was hosted by Cliffie Stone. And Melody Ranch? Another great show hosted by my old boss at the Foothill Club Billy Mize who I'm sure you know since you're from Bakersfield. Those were the good old days of live TV shows. Just not anything like that anymore.....JH in Va.

Yep, I got to play that Mosrite when Joe & Rose along with the Ventures did a show at Oceanside Music Supply in 1963. Irby Mandrell (Barbara's dad) was half owner of the store. Joe put that guitar on my lap and it was almost more than I could handle for a 13 year old. I proceeded to play the surf classic "Miserlou" which I heard afterwards Joe made a comment to Irby about surf music being played on his guitar.
