I've been fortunate to have done a few gigs with Buddy in the last few years. Usually it's with me on bass, although I have done a couple twin steel gigs as well. I can tell you he is a GREAT player with taste, touch, tone, and chops for days! He lives near Lake Elsinore CA, where he takes care of his invalid wife, and he only rarely takes gigs. When he does, he only seems to want to play the steel and not the guitar. I'm not exactly sure why that is?

Buddy plays a black D10 P/P through a Music Man 115. Most of the steel recordings I've heard him on don't do justice to the great tone he has now.

I located an LP album I've had for many years - "Songs of the Islands" featuring Buddy Merrill, Imterpreted by Lawrence Welk". DOT label. Some excellent steel on this album.
According to the cover, Buddy joined the Welk caravan when he was only 17 years old. Did not read music, but decided to learn and was apparently a fast learner. Welk said he was "one of the best band arrangers in the business".
