Last night we had a two band gig,
some fine jazz/funk players from Hong Kong
and Bangkok. Plus my band, flow.

The stand out was drummer Larry Hamilton from the US. west coast.
A jazz drummer, who can dial it back, to any style
with an operaticallty trained voice!!
He's been over here more than a decade working all the time.

We kinda put both bands together over much of the night.
Each band did a set of it's own,
and then we mixed it up.

We had 2 drummers play with us, and Larry sang several while drumming for us too.
4 part harmonies on the soul and pop tunes.

So I had a great jazz bassplayer behind me,
and got HOURS of steel time.
I never imagined I would play September by
Earth Wind and Fire on steel, but I did!
Trying to hit those horn and keys parts.

We strectched out from Jobim through Herbie Hancok,
on to 60's soul and pop standards, like My Girl,
into Stevie Ray, Hendrix, and Ray Charles rave ups,
On to several Santana tunes, Bob Marley, Van Morrison,
and we did many originals. All crowd pleasing stuff.

Played a bit more E9, thsn C6, but plenty of C6.

At sound check, when I heard we had another real rythmn section,
I mentioned I wanted to bring my pedal steel and Larry said
WOW!, you got one, bring it, bring it!!

He then said, hey you know of this gospel player,
playing funk and blues on one of them, Robert Randolph, he's killer!
I said sure, I like him, no problem,
I'll play in that direction too.

Now what I find interesting is that
RR is known to
a SERIOUS Hong Kong jazz player,
who was really happy to have me bring
my steel and play hard and agressive.

Even over here, RR is expanding the reach of the steel,
and making it welcome in unusual settings.
This is a great thing. The fact the jazz world is listening to him is good too.

Who knows maybe this will lead them to discovery Buddy
and some of our other great players in "Our World"!

In any case I had a great time,
and I am totally fried today..
But worth it.

This beach side venue The Secret Garden,
has been a Sunday late afternoon/evening institution for 5+ years.
Good barbicue, and lots of musical variety.

And it seems to be very steel friendly too.
