I just had to tell y'all that my brother and I, both in St. John's for a labour law convention, have been spending a little time around Chris. St. John's has an amazing music scene for a small city, and Chris is very active around here as a recording artist and performer. A great guy, a terrific singer, writes great songs. And sings lots of old ones that I love. Last night he held a bar full of labour lawyers from all over Canada transfixed with just himself and his Gibson Southern Jumbo. Tonight I hope to slip over to a pub called "The Ship" and hear him play steel. On Thursday night my brother Rick played bass with him at yet another local watering hole (this town has the nicest pubs you could imagine) while I was stuck in Toronto with multiple flight delays. Made up for it last night though - what a treat to sing harmony for Chris on "Streets of Baltimore"! |

I would also add that Chris is a good guy to deal with. I recently purchased a lap steel from him; it was exactly as he advertised it and he was extremely accomodating in terms of the transaction. (I am also happy to see that there are at least a few other lawyers here on the Forum!) |

Thanks for the kind words, boys.
Michael, I'm glad you like the National.....it worked out for me too because I finally found an 8-string with legs - something I've wanted for quite a while.
Bob, you and your brother really impressed me with your singing and playing. I was a little nervous when the club suddenly filled up to capacity and I was there alone with only an acoustic guitar and a mic. But you guys put me at ease, and it was great when you got up for a few tunes. And yes, "Baltimore" was fun. Thanks for jumping up and putting in that nice high harmony. It was a real pleasure talking steel with you as well.
Last night was only the appetizer. Wait until tonight when the 6-piece country band kicks in at The Ship. I'm taking pics of you picking my steel so I can put them right here on this thread. |

Well, the "Eight Track Favorites" are just a dynamite kick-butt honky-tonk band - they had this little pub called "The Ship" just jammed, and the dance floor was full all night. Including of course my spouse Leanne and a bunch of the labour law crowd, who were very keen to dance, and were all dressed to the nines from a big lobster dinner we had just come from. As nice and friendly a crowd as you could hope for. What a friendly and charming little city this is - the history just jumps out at you everywhere you look. Chris sounded great, playing a borrowed LeGrande II while waiting for his new axe to arrive. Towards the end of the evening (they went till about 3) someone requested Pancho and Lefty, and Chris played a beautiful solo. Very talented and creative player. I enjoyed the whole band, who are all versatile musicians who play a wide variety of different kinds of gigs around here. A great fiddle player, which one would certainly expcet in St. John's. What a great weekend it's been. Now comes the long trip home - boy this is a big country..... |

Bob, what a time we had last night! thanks again for the kind words. It was great to hear YOU play steel - you have such a tasty and fancy reportoire of licks and chords. Don't worry - I was watching like a hawk and stole a few. I envy your command of the instrument. It was a real treat to have such an experienced player around. So glad you could come and play with the band. They all really enjoyed having you up there.
