From past sightings around here, Wayne hasn't had a steeler with him, but you never know.

We played a gig with Wayne about a year ago, and he was playing a 3 piece. Wayne, a really hot tele player, and one of the best doghouse bass players I have ever heard. Very tight band, you'll enjoy it. Wayne's a great guy too.

I've never known Wayne to carry a steel on the road but I believe it is Lloyd Maines on at least some of the recordings. Perhaps Jeremy Wakefield on some as well.

I have an amusing (and true) story I like to tell on Wayne. Many years ago I was playing with Lee Roy Parnell at Rockefellers in Houston, TX and Wayne was the opener. This was the early '90's and we weren't familiar with Wayne at the time. Anyway we could see him and his band come into the club during our sound-check. After we got through, we introduced ourselve's to Wayne and offered him the use of our drummer's kit as we didn't want to strike it and there just wasn't enough room on the small stage to set up two drum kits.

Wayne's reply was "Thank's, but if you got a good dog house bass player you don't EVER need no drummer!"

We didn't realize Wayne didn't use a drummer but we sure found out! I watched them plug in a couple of guitars (two electric players and Wayne on acoustic) and that dog house bass. I then proceeded to watch their soundcheck with my jaw on the floor.

A few years ago Wayne came thru NYC with Don Herron (sp?) on steel. But since then I've come to understand that that is not the norm.

For about the last 3 or 4 years Wayne hasnt had a steel player on the road. Eddie Bieble has been playing Tele for him and is really good.Chris Darell is a great Doghouse bass player as well. Its a great show worth checking out.

There was a guy who played steel and Strat with Wayne. Hi name was Miller cuz Wayne would always shout "It's Miller time!!!!" and this guy would play one or the other, very enjoyable.

That was Chris Miller. He sat at a console grand while playing a tele and was really hip. When I opened for Wayne at the New Orleans House of Blues many years ago, the HOB had a sunday hip-hop night which started around 1:00 am. Near the end of Waynes set , the house started to fill with young black rap fans by the hundreds. I`m not sure who was more suprised, the young hip-hopppers or the band, but it was an interesting contrast.

I saw Wayne here in Seattle a long time ago - around his 1st or 2nd record. He had Biller and Wakefield with him and it was stunning. Those guys seemed to have bottomless bags of tricks to pull from. It was mesmerizing - one of the nicest shows I've seen.

We saw Wayne a few years ago when he visited our shores.
The guy on steel looked like a tall athletic college boy,he played a rickenbacker,at the start of the set his volume pedal packed in and he played the gig with his little finger wrapped around the volume knob on the steel and made it look so easy .
I am sorry I did'nt get to speak to him he was a tremendous player.
Best regards
billy

I just saw Wayne on his last tour here in Seattle maybe a month or two ago. No steel

He was great, but the opening band played for an hour and a half!!, no kidding....kinda took all the wind out of the audience who had to stand there on a hard concrete floor. Everytime they would start another song the audience would let out a little groan...too bad, they were pretty good, but man thats along time for an opening band to play. Maybe Wayne asked em to do that?...kinda ruined the show for me.

I worked with Wayne some back when we recorded "Thunderstorms and Neon Signs." The non-pedal steels were myself and Lloyd Maines.

Wayne totally cracked me up onstage at the Continental Club one night. It was Wayne, Mario the excellent swing guitarist, an upright bassist and me. I was playing my 1949 Bigsby... but it (gasp!) had pedals!

Wayne threw a sh*tfit. "Man, you gotta take those pedals off, dude!! The people are laughing at me!!"

Yes, Wayne. I'm sure it's the pedals that's causing the audience laughter!
