This week was "country week", and I though I heard a few steel notes in there, but couldn't spot a steeler in the band. Anybody know if there was in fact a steeler, and if so, who that was?
Just curious... |

You know it's funny, I had never watched that show until this year, but my daughters got into it, so I'm watching it with them...
Anyways, the point is that I end up agreeing with 99% of what Simon says... I thinks the man simply speaks the truth in term of professional opinion...
And godamnit, I don't care whether he's a country boy or not, Bucky's got to go!!!
So who was that mystery steel player? Anyone? |

I tend to agree with Simon a lot. He has a strong sense of what will sell to the public. He just hasn't graduated from the Deep South School of Sensitivity yet. Pickler fan here! |

my favorite is kelly pickler but i believe that chris daughtery will be the last one standing. i hate to see country judged on american idol cause they are so prejudiced towards it and think that it is boring music, way to go kenny rogers for getting on simon. of course he admitted that he hated country music. the steel sounded to me that it was fake like a keyboard.
by the way i thought that cursing was not allowed on the forum i especially hate to see the GD word used surely we could use other words.

Jeremy, I agree with you that the judges aren't too familiar with country, and definitelly feel out of their elements when they have to comment on those "country" performences.
That being said, sometimes, it works in the contestant's favor. For exemple, Bucky really sucks, but he is given a free pass virtually every week because they have no frame of reference. Also keep in mind that Carrie Underwood was last year's winner.
On the language, I'm sincerely sorry if I offended you, but I feel like a place like this should pretty much be governed by the same rules that apply on network TV. The expression I used was well within the bounds of what is acceptable in that context. If I'm wrong, B0b, please feel free to let me know. But again, my intention was not to offend any one...

Bucky's gotta go? Come on, guys! He's like Greg Allman if Allman was young and not doped up...but then again, maybe that's what made Greg sound good.
Be that as it may, I'm not a critic of singers -- or anything, for that matter, but I do like to hear Bucky sing. He may not be the American Idol, but he seems like a nice kid who's got a great, southern growl. We need him.

the Judges are part of the show..part of the act..
Randy, Paula and Simon..are an integral part of this shows success.
What they say, how they act..is not by accident..
In some sense, they are equal if not more important than the actual performers..
It's a TV show first..a contest second..
The show, the Judges etc..will be back..
the contestants may not be..

I agree with Simon a lot of the time and he usually appears to be on center and speak his mind. Sometimes he totally disses a singer at times though, when there may be a good thing or two to say about them.
I do admire his ability to say whathe thinks is the truth without caring about public opinion or what may be unpopular.

Al, I agree that Bucky seems like a really nice guy. It's just that purely as a vocalist, he's almost always pitchy, and he tends to mumble... Kelly, I think, has the making of a great country lady, eventually, like a Lee Ann Woamack or someone like that. But for my money, Cathryn is really world class.
Man, I'm getting way too into this.
But to keep it a steel topic, I just received inside information from the person who was the steeler in previous years. i'll let him share it here if he wishes to.[This message was edited by Stephan Franck on 08 April 2006 at 09:46 AM.] |

I think there was a steel player on the Weds night show, maybe at Kenny's request? I heard the keyboard gliss/steel sounding stuff on previous shows, but the Weds night show had real steel I think.
The girl that left on Weds, Mandissa? definitely had something steel sounding on her 'going away song', the Shania song, that she did Tues without it.
I guess if they had steel there for Kenny, why not?
I bet out buddy Mr. Bovine might know... ??? BTW, I thought Ms. Pickler sounded great on Fancy. |

I emailed Stephan about this but I didn't mean to say that there was no steel player on this week's show. I only heard a little bit from my video tape, but I thought it sounded a lot more like the real thing than usual. |

Doug I agree, last week (unlike the other weeks)sounded like real steel, which was the reason for my original post (before I started confusing myself...)
So we're back to square one -- who's that mystery steeler? |

You have now come to the beginning of understanding.
Remember the old Styx song, Grand Illusion?....."Don't be fooled by the radio, the TV or the magazine"......
"They show you photographs, of how your life should be......
Compared to someone elses fantasy".............

I don't know who the steel player was could it have been the world's most noteable steel guitar player? Little Roy Wiggins, he's always been my pick since he is directly responsible for the steel guitar industry being what it is today, or maybe Harold Jackson another pioneer that we all miss these days. |

The only one I recognize is Paul Jackson Jr. He was on the show in previous years when I played on "country week". Dean Parks was also on country week. Back then we were not on camera (pre-recorded a couple of days before the broadcast). |
