Lately I am starting to get requests to play and teach songs by artists that are not re-
garded as Country. Neil Young is a good example. Great song writer and smart arranger. I just never paid much attention
until my son and a few students started
turning me towards this music. Very enjoyable to play but it takes some work.
Here is an example of a recent lesson I
prepared. http://freefilehosting.net/?id=pNv3lKXf

Nice job, Roy. Do you know that song is about his car? I like to play along with Harvest Moon. JP

you Rock Roy !

Great example of this fine tune.

Excellent playing, thanks for posting it.

In my just PRE Country Years I was a big time NY fan, and do listne now and then to his tunes from that era, ( 70's) he wrote many fine tunes , good to hear some folks are reviving a few. I believe Emmylou Harris did this one on one of her 80's LPs and we even covered it in our band at the time...

good stuff
thanks

Nice job Roy!

The song title is Roy's thread title:

"Long May You Run"

It first appeared on an album called the Stills-Young Band in the mid 70's, alluding to a shortlived band that Neil had with Stephen Stills.

It is about a car. Neil has had many cars, and is also an avid model railroader, and actually a part owner of Lionel, the model train company.

My favorite verse from the song:

" Maybe The Beach Boys have got you now
With those waves singing "Caroline No"
Rollin' down that empty ocean road
Gettin' to the surf on time."

Neil is quoted as saying that Long May You Run is about "my first car and my last girlfriend."

Real nice playing, Roy - that tune has always been one of my favorites. I play lots of NY in my current band. The young guys that I play with right now are much inspired by Neil, and it shows up in their songwriting.

Lovely playing to an unforgettable song.

I seem to remember the car in question was a hearse nicknamed "Mort" which he used to drive his band's equipment around in. Adds a certain wicked irony to the lyrics.

Ben Keith of course is Neil's very fine long time steel player. I don't think there's any steel on this song originally - on this evidence there should have been.
