I got a call from my mate Warren today to tell me that our mutual friend Kenny K has been inducted into the ROLL OF RENOWN.....if inducted is the right word........which means he is up there with all the other greats of Australian Country Music.
It is not an award as an instrumentalist.... I believe ... but for his contribution to Country Music.
Both Warren and I agree that this is way over due....but at least it has happened.
Kenny is the nicest guy you would ever wish to meet........I remember 30 odd years ago he tipped his guitar over to show me the mechanics....the fact that it was in the middle of the stage at the end of a Red Sovine show didnt matter !!!!!!!!!
There are more Kenny K stories......but I just wanted to let everyone know of his award.

I dont think Kenny is on the Forum....but should any of his Fans or Friends from around the world care to post here I will make sure he gets to see them...the posts not the fans or the friends!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Tony......good to hear tht Kenny K is getting some recognition at last.....he, and many others, in Australia have put in a lot of time and effort with their endeavours......Kenny is/was a member of the Steel Guitatr Club of Australia..( as was I until a few years ago ) he is indeed one of our greats...along with the late Norm Bodkin..George Xanthos ( ex Hawking bros.) the late Ben E. What Glyn said.I don't know Kenny personally but have seen him play a number of times. He and the other greats Glyn mentioned are responsible for starting the pedal steel playing careers of the majority of Australian players including my own.

I took lessons from Ben Joyner for about 4 years prior to his untimely passing..and my psg and associated `bits and bobs` I get from George " The King" Xanthos..two of the nicest gentlemen to ever put foot on this planet......I also have a favourite CD of Norm Bodking and Kenny Kitchen playing great country stuff together.....Norm on his leftie fender S10 and Kenny on C6th and dobro....play this CD so much I think it`s in danger of wearing out !!!!!!..although I can`t say I `know` Kenny personally I did correspond with him a few years ago when I got started on psg...always willing to help....real nice guy IMHO.
He deserves the accolades and recognition

I saw Kenny Kitching for the the first time in early February 1976 at the Crystal Palace Hotel in George St Sydney. Coincidentally an American gentleman and his wife, Mary were seeing Kenny for the first time on that night. The American's name was DeWitt Scott (I later learned who he was in the scheme of things). I bought my first pedal steel (a Sho Bud d-10 Pro III?) a week later because of Kenny's inspiration. I still have quite a few live tapes of his playing from that time. Kenny was in a class of his own.

Well done (and about time), Kenny.

Many years ago I had the privilage to not only meet Kenny, but to back him up on r/guitar in Hawai'i. What a great guy he is! At that time he had made a beautiful double neck (10/Cool non-pedal guitar. Not only was the finish beautiful, the tone was superb. Kenny interpreted Hawaiian music with great feeling. It was a joy to be with him. Should anyone reading this in Aussieland be seeing him, please pass along my sincere congratulations and very best wishes ...

George,Grahame and everyone else who would care to congratulate him.........this Award is not for just an instrumentalist, its not for being a Country Music person.....all though in the 70's Kenny told me he was doing something like 200 recording sessions a year!!!!!!!!!!!!
This award apparently is the Pinnacle here in Australia so my Buddy tells me...its for his contribution to the music industry in general.............I am so proud to call him my mate.........we've travelled a bit together.....been in each others houses and drank each others beer.
I intend to keep bumping this for a few days and then print out the responses.....and if I can I will laminate them as a keep sake for Kenny and get them to him...so come on you guys?.......I know Kenny has touched every Steelers soul here in Aus...and I know he has touched a few souls overseas too.
Hoping for some more response
Tony

TONY, it matters not what the award is for as far as I am concerned. He deserves an award for being the nice guy he is, a fine steel guitar builder, and a great steel guitarist.

I visited Kenny in his home about four years ago. He was very cordial and congenial, and very much a gentleman. It was a treat for me to meet him. I'm sure he does'nt remember, but I was accompanied by Pee Wee Clark-also a legendary steel guitarist. I congratulate Kenny on receiving the award; he is most deserving.

Grahm, you are correct....Mary and I were in Australia and we went to hear Kenny play at the Crystal Palace. We then traveled all over Australia and listened to many more steel players. What I was doing was searching for a steel player to bring to St. Louis and play on the International Steel Guitar Convention. When we returned to Sidney and went back to the Crystal Palace it was then that I announced that I had selected Ken as that steel player. Anyone knowing Ken knows that tears came to his eyes as he is a very emotional person. Not only did he come to St. Louis but I also took him to Nashville and we recorded a session on him. The title was "From Sidney To Nashville".

Congratulations to Ken for his award AND for his "Lifetime Achievement Award" presented to him by Jerry Byrd. "Good on ya' mate".

George Kehoiki....sorry I should have written it down before I typed.....
I intend to give this post a run of about a week then.....if anyone else cares to say hello to Kenny I will print and laminate it...I think it is the least we can do for such an Ambassador of the Steel guitar.........and be assured George that I will mention you separatly to Kenny as I will call him too.
Thanks for taking the trouble to write
Tony

I've never met Kenny but I've heard some of his recorded work and I can understand why he's held in such high esteem by so many people. I hope that the next time I'm visiting "down under" that I'll get to meet him through our mutual friends Tony and Warren.
Congratulations Kenny
