Post by Ron Farrar »

Hi all
Bill Brown was selling some gear earlier among them was a bar with a contol ring. Can anyone explain what a control ring is?
Thanks

I have a little "control ring". It was placed on my left hand at the wedding. Image

I think that control ring would be something else to just hold you back from developing good tone bar control. The bar should be held loosely in the hand, not stuck on there with a ring. Jeff Newman, bless his heart [& we still miss him], would have a fit over something like that. See Jeff's 'Pedal Steel Guitar techniques' video then git yer hacksaw & saw that ring off there!!

For some that read this thread that do have problems holding onto the bar there are ways of doing something similar to the control ring by just taking a couple narrow strips of the stick on velcro and placing them on the sides of the bar I drilled and tapped out a small hole in the bar that I can put a small pan head electrical screw into and fasten a small piece of plastic on the bar Anything that gives your fingers a place to grab ahold of the bar
It makes your bar one sided but saves dropping the bar and putting dings in the guitar!!
Good luck

Due to some physical problems, some folks might have a difficult time controlling the bar. This would be a very good feature in this kind of situation.

Here is a mod I did to a bar after having a hand cramp problem. It is simple and works well. It can be taken off without damaging the bar.
