Well, the C6 Workshop was a great success! What a great weekend this turned out to be.
We had a group of 17 people from the local area and the surrounding states. Well, 18 if you count the woman who wandered in looking for a hat. Or 19 if you count the guy who wandered in looking for jumper cables...
Friends who have never met face to face, met face to face. Friends that we don't see often enough, had the opportunity to meet again.
Reece's instruction was excellent, logical, interesting, personal, and personable. Much confusion or lack of knowledge was remedied with regard to the non pedal C6 tuning.
I have some good photos that I'll edit and post this evening. In the interim, feel free to post your experience of this workshop weekend.[This message was edited by HowardR on 27 February 2006 at 09:07 AM.] |

The day started for me on Saturday. I picked up Howard outside his apartment. He met me outside obviously in an attempt to keep me from casing the joint.
We dropped some stuff off at his place of work and then headed out to the airport to pick up Reece. With Howard in the navigator seat, we went on the scenic route to the airport. I saw parts of Queens I've only dreamt of.
Nevertheless, we got there in plenty of time to pick up Reece. We got Reece settled in at the hotel and then I took Reece out to eat so that he could see what a $15 hamburger looked like. (Reece paid - thanks Reece!)
I then took Reece on the NY Tour: Times Square, the Colony music store, 48th Street, then up to Central Park. We didn't get mugged once!
Back to Howards where Reece tuned up my 12 string so now I won't have to do that for another year. Reece then gave Howard and me a private concert: I don't have to tell you that was the highlight for me.
We then took Reece for drinks and dinner so that Reece could see what an hour and half wait time for a table looked like and what a $10 margaretta looked like. At dinner Howard paid (Thanks Howard! - man, I got off cheap).
Thoughout it all I pumped Reece for stories about working with Bob Wills, Willie Nelson and the rest. I then called the National Enquirer to see if they wanted to buy my exclusive.
The next day, it was really nice meeting folks who I had only seen online in the forum. Reece's instruction was clear, insigtful, and inspirational. Although he must of have done something to my Superslide: It sounded amazing when he was playing it, but when I got it back home for some reason it didn't sound the same.
I legislating Howard to convince Reece to come back for a 12 string workshop soon. How about it Reece? |

I would like to thank Howard and Reese for an amazing day. It would have been worth the price of admission just to hear Reese play "Way To Survive" on a 12-string non-pedal steel, beautiful tone, so much feel and soul in his playing I couldn't believe it.
And on top of that, he is one of the most gracious gentlemen I have ever had the pleasure to meet. He shared lots of great advice, some hilarious anecdotes, and his SmarTab tab, which is very aptly named. But the best part for me was really getting to see a master play right before my very eyes, we just don't get that many opportunities to hear players of his caliber here in New York. He even made a very nice comment about my playing, you could have knocked me over with a feather! So thanks, Reece and Howard, I had great day, and greatly appreciate all the work you both put into making it happen.[This message was edited by Gerald Menke on 27 February 2006 at 01:27 PM.] |

Well, I started a thread on Reece's style and tuning over in the No Pedals section. My girlfriend and I came into the city Friday and stayed with a friend on W. 48th. We went out to hear some jazz and I got to see what a $30 cover charge looks like. Course I didn't pay it, but I got to see the outside of some places that wanted that. And one place was closed down as the crime scene of a murder the night before. I could have seen that in Philly. Probably happened 'cause somebody paid 30 bucks and got in and couldn't find a seat. But we finally slipped in between acts for no cover at a hole in the wall near Sheridan Square. There was a very good female vocalist (more Simone than Krall). And she had brought along several female friends. And the owner/bouncer was a woman. And this fairly big drunk guy wandered in off the street, and she grabbed him and threw him out straight away. My girlfriend was the only one who could get the waitress' attention for drinks. Well to make a long story short, there are a heck of a lot of bars in New York City. And every one we went in there was some one guy sitting with three beautiful women. And I couldn't figure out how that could be; but then later we passed by some bars with nothing but guys inside.
So after counting how many bars there are between downtown and uptown (and every one packed on Saturday night), Sunday morning I had a bit of a struggle to get to Reece's workshop on time. But it was sure good to meet a bunch of East Coast steelers I've gotten to know here on the Forum. It was quite a scene to see all these steelers hunched over a varied collection of lap steels, with Reece Anderson teaching and playing his gorgeous big chords, and all surrounded by walls full of womens hats.
You're alright, HowardR. Thanks for the great experience. And thanks for b0b and the Forum for providing the connection.

Big Thanks to members of HowardR Productions and our teacher, Mr. Anderson. :>
I know it takes heck of a lot effort to host event like this. So again, thank U, thank u.
That play-along CD for blues practice was nice, I'm wondering anyone has play-along Jazz tracks?? Maybe Jim Cohen may know? Jim?
Already thinking of "C6 pedals workshop"...

OK, I'll try to be objective and not all star-struck by a seminar from one of the great steel players in the world, but, here's the most important thing.... Reese can teach!!!
I takes a real breakthrough to get through my thick skull but Mr. A did it.
He has a way of explaining the C6 neck and music in general that just seems logical and thereby "learnable".
Thanks, Reese and Howard for the best (musical) day I've spent yet in 2006!!!
p.s.ditto on meeting some nice fellow steelers and forumites |

I was just out with my girl looking for jazz. The rest was just New York happening to me. Hey, you're the guy in the women's fashion business. Not that there's anything wrong with that. |

I see some of you crossed the USA to be there....
I personally live in Spain and would go to England, France, Belgium, wherever in Europe if Reece were to come over for a weekend (or a week)
¿Any other of us Europeans feel the same way?

Heck, I'd even go to Texas to see Maurice... so why not going to France, Germany... even Belgium (where ever that is)... I'd even stay a little longer than strictly nececairy in Spain to see him

First two with the idea are in Spain....so that´s settled. Reece spends a sun soaked week in Barcelona and all the British and German and Belgian pickers han hitchhike down.

Musico....Your idea of Teresa and I spending a sun soaked week in Barcelona is like "musico" to my ears. My new motto may become...."you ask, and I'll come" so be careful what you wish for.
JD....I'm still holding your new SuperSlide hostage here in my home hoping you will come visit us. You have after all, already paid the ransom. |

OK Reece,
here are the harsh realities.
You could both come.
You could bring JD´s superslide, he can get here by train in 3 hours.
You would have to sleep on a very ample and comfortable double sofa bed (we have 2) in a room with a sea view.
We have a 540 square feet sun soaked terrace where you would have to sunbathe, or lie in the shade of the lemon tree.
You would be the excuse for my wife to cook paella, squid, lobster, shrimp and all sorts of stuff that needs to be washed down with copious Spanish Rioja wine.
You would need to take a walk in the orange groves or walk the three blocks to the beach to shake all the food down.
So as you see....it wouldn´t all be doing a 12 string seminar. There are always negative aspects to anything.

Musico....You succeeded at being very tempting. I greatly appreciate the kind gesture of hospitality. As I said before, be careful what you wish for. |
