I had a gig this weekend way up north here in Norway, so we had to travel by plain to get there. I live in the middle of the country (Trondheim) but here in Norway the flights are a little backwards so we (the band) had to go south (Oslo) before we went north. So anyway we had to check in our luggage again in Oslo before we went north, and we had a good flight. And there we were at the baggage drop, and the guitars came, bass came, and other luggage, but no steel… And it never came… So I had to complain to the staff on the airport, and they checked up on their computer, but they couldn’t find my steel anywhere, and it was not registered in Oslo. I got nervous. So they had to put in a search on the computer, I described the steelcase, and we had to leave for the gig, we had soundcheck at 3 pm. So the others had their soundcheck, I stood there just watching, and occasionally called the Oslo airport the see if they had found anything, but no… I knew that the place we were playing opened at 7.30 pm, and we should start at 9.30, so I was running out of time. But about 5 pm they called, they had found the steel! So they put it on an aeroplane, it landed about 7.30, and then they sent it with a taxi to where we were playing, so I got it at 8.30. And as you can figure, I was a happy man.

Tommy,
I was fearing the worst as I was reading your tale and I am really pleased it had a happy ending.
By the way I visited Trondheim many times during the late sixties when I was in the merchant navy with Texaco Tankers.
Best regards

This scares the be-jibbers out of me.
I've invested in a great flight case, but there's no way that will prevent loss. They insist you sign a slip that they are not responsible for more than $250. That wouldn't even pay for the case!
So far no problem, except several dings to the case corners. |

Have you ever tried to pick out your suitcase from 3,000 other ones stacked on the dock???
I always swore (after losing our luggage for a few hours on a cruise) that the next time I traveled on any commercial carrier, every piece of luggage would be painted lime green or flourescent orange! That should make it very easy to spot...and identify.

Bob Hope said he once went through the Los Angeles Airport on a trip, and told the lady at the ticket counter, Miss I would like this bag to go to New York, This bag to Florida, and this bag to Washingtion. The lady at the ticket counter said "sir we can't do that", to which Bob Hope replied "why not you did it last time I flew with ya'll". Tommy I love happy endings, glad all worked out. I was in Oslo in 1980 on a NATO exercise, and even got to meet the King of Norway, man he was a little fella too. Nice country. |

Tommy, I had exactly the same thing happen to me when our band flew from Texas to Kodiak Alaska last year.
The only difference is that my guitar was damaged and I didn't notice it until we were setting up for a sound check.
It looked like someone had grabbed the guitar by the pullrods and jerked it out of the case bending all kinds of stuff.

Tommy,
I`m glad you got it back!
Mark!
Our King you met was King Olav who died some 15 years ago.
Here`s a funny story from 1973 when the oil crisis hit the world.
Nobody in Norway where allowed to use their car between Saturday 4:00pm and Monday morning in order to save gas.
King Olav who loved to go skiing did not use his own car either. He decided to take the city train, paying his own ticket, to get out to the ski area.
Check out the photo in the link: http://www.nrk.no/underholdning/store_norske/4544536.html
The woman sitting next to him were a complete stranger and she didn`t see who it was untill sitting down.
No problem with security back then...
