I have read several threads on the forum lately about steels and other equipment being stolen. It brings to mind a question about possibly having a forum section where a person, if they wished, could register the items that they own. As a result of such a thing, anyone who came across a steel or related item in a pawn shop, music store, ebay, etc. could reference the list against equipment registered by forum members. I know that this is a generalization, and some concessions would have to be made for privacy, etc., but it might be a help in recovering some of these stolen items.

I have been thinking about the same thing. In fact I have given serious thought to adding a PSG Registry to my new site at ilovepedalsteel.com. I'm just worried that like the forum it could possibly grow beyond my capabilties and or finacial means. But, since the question has been asked so to speak, I'll hang around and see what others have to say.

Maybe just limit it to stolen steels. If it is just a simple table of serial numbers and descriptions, it probably would be managable. It might also be a good idea to team with some other websites to share the link.
If the site is set up right, ideally just typing the serial number into Google, nothing more would link to the stolen guitar. (be aware there will be lag time before the search engines find, even if you submit your site to them)
I don't think it would add any additional cost assuming you do your own website writing. ALso should you eventually abandon your website, you should be willing to pass the list on to another host.
