I heard a cut from one of the nominees for best jazz instrumental on public radio here in Edmonton yesterday. It used steel as the main instrument. It was a Canadian artist but I can't remember the name. Can anyone help me out?

The name is Daniel Lanois. He was nominated for three catagories and won for producer of the year.

Best Pop Instrumental Album: Belladonna/Daniel Lanois
Best Pop Instrumental Performance: Agave/Daniel Lanois
Album Of The Year: How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb/U2

After hearing the cut on the radio with steel being featured, I want to find his material and listen to some more.

Very cool. I had no idea he was involved in producing.

Daniel does some incredible productions. Besides U2, check out Emmylou Harris' "Wrecking Ball" and Willie Nelson's "Teatro" among others. "Belladonna" is a very cool record--all instumental and very moody.

I'm a huge fan ...

Ah, so it was Daniel Lanois! That was the first name that struck me, but I didn't see his name on the "jazz" lists (for obvious reasons....). He's one of my all time favorite producers!

Barry,- the steeler is Lanois. I haven't heard his latest instrumental CD, but
I don't think you should expect the typical "steel instrumental" CD. He's a very 'soundscape' type of player/producer...

Lanois is one of my favorites, gets noises to come out of the PSG that I have never even thought possible- and they always make the tune better. As a producer I am sure he spends a lot of tim deliberating over sounds, effects, etc., but his songs are well thought out instrumentals, mostly. Check out Belladonna sometime, great stuff.

Daniel Lanois, I daresay, is much more well known as a producer than he is a recording artist.
