Okay, everyone put down your vote for the fastest steel picking ever, by any player at any point in history... Give whatever info you have, like the player, artist, song/album or event, and post a link if you have a clip!
I'll have to mull this over personally, but what do you say? |

Jimmy Day once said about some speed picker. "Boy I really wish I could do that and then I wouldn't"
I agree with that sentement. Playing a million miles an hour is just acrobatics. I'd rather hear somebody play fewer notes per minute, but play them with soul. |

The fastest steel picking has never been recorded. At least not commercially.The tune Larry posted is fast.But not nearly as fast as I've heard Paul play in a 4 hour jam session.Same is true for Buddy Emmons,Tommy White,Buck Reid,Terry Crisp and I'm sure I've left out several.It's after 2am here.
My point. I hate to see this become a contest. 1st of all. We will never agree on who's the fastest. 2nd.There are 2 kinds of fast.The cheap licks,The really easy to get to licks.Or the ones that's really hard to finger.Sadly, a lot of less experienced players can't tell the difference.3rd.Most all of todays speed pickers are members here.Just my 2 cents.

Maybe there's a 'pickin' barrier, like the speed of sound, and one can only approach it.
But PF gets my vote; I don't know how he does that without having a nervous breakdown. |

Franklin, Jernigan, Wright and White are probably the 4 quickest players out there today. I love to hear some of these guy's pyrotechnics at times, but too much of it and my brain switches off.
While the above guys have so much in their musical locker, give me the taste and pure musicianship of Buddy Emmons and Maurice Anderson any day of the week.
It's whatever rings your bell.

A little leg humpin' here, but Bobby Boggs can flat git it, and be creative at the same time!
But playing fast JUST for the sake of playing fast, is sorta stupid. I wish my technique were such that I could play as fast as some of the stuff I hear, but I wish I had the technique to play the slow, soulful stuff that I feel. |

PF gets my vote too, but Herby Wallace deserves an honourable mention here. I still have (somewhere in the quagmire of my computer's memory) a short sample of Tim Sergent with the Dixie Chicks - that was pretty amazing, as well.
One thing's for sure - it's not me.....

| I've never done much with tab, but would love to see someone do 20 speed breaks tabbed out and on video (like the break Larry gave us on his post). I am getting older now and might want to cheat a little to learn something new. Any of the guys mentioned so far would be okay with me. |

| It seems to me, and I can be corrected, that just about equal use of the index finger helps out here. My brain "ain't" wired that way. I use my thumb and middle finger mostly, but then too I'm not a speed picker. I think that a great video on this subject is one by Tommy White that I've seen. |

I'm not to sure about the fastest picker on Steel. But the fastest driver is certainly Smiley Roberts.  I still have the shorts to prove it. Wally Murphy certainly is super fast and still would be a top nominee in my book. Smooth fast, catch Doug Jernigan sometimes but don't watch his fingers you will get dizzy.Speeds great but Its the smooth sweet players that impress me the most unless its Jazz. fast is usually over quick slow and easy always gets the job done,

Fastest Picker Ever ?
I don't think we reached "EVER" yet !
I think the exciting thing about listening to the polished pros' is the varying styles and not getting locked into a single basic phrase repeated...
The PF clip above is certainly an excellent example of that...
And those that are thinking that "The Good Old Stuff" is all I wanna play..
I don't believe you....sorry...
there ain't nobody breathin' who plays one of these dang things that does not want to show up on a gig or Steel show and burn like the clip above...
Some may play DIFFERENT than PF's clip above..but I doubt better....that clip has a lot af stuff going on...
I don't think he learn't that from a TAB program...
and I ain't even a genious..just ask my wife !
