Last nights show in Philly was great. Miranda Lambert opened, a guitar player pick up a lap steel and played one tune, he had alot of gear on the floor for the one tune.. did'nt matter...could not hear a note of it. Miranda can sing!!
Tracy Lawrence was great, his voice has matured and he can work the crowd..He introduced the band as the "Broke Back Mountain Boys" . got a great laugh..
Who plays steel for him now. From the overhead camera I could see an Emmons SD-10 that looked like it had been a D-10. He used a dobro simulator that sounded good.
George was great..Steel player on a Zum D10 ..sounded fine. Mike ? from Austin..
It seems that while the in the ear monitors work great the drawback is that you can't hear the house mix.. and it sucked. |

Just a note about Loren Nelson. I had the pleasure to work quite a few shows with him in Florida in "87 & "88. He was always playing guitar on those days, with Gene O'Neal or Gary Morse playing steel. It was a fun time for me, and Loren's playing was certainly a big part of that great time. I ran into him at one of the Nashville jams last year and he really seems to be enjoying the job with Tracy. I'm very happy for him and wish him continued success.

Bo, that was Mike Daily playing the black ZumSteel with George Strait. Mike is a longtime member of the "Ace In The Hole Band". He's from San Marcos, Texas and was in the band before they hired George as the lead singer. Hey Bo-
Sounds like a fun show.....
If the house mix sucked it was not because the players were wearing in-ear monitors.
Even with wedges, you don't really know what's going out to the audience - that's all up to the front of house engineer.
We use in-ears, and have a separate mix for each, so we just hear what we want to hear, and stage volume is not an issue. It takes very little getting used to, and I admit I'm totally spoiled....
We have a great sound engineer that we trust, but some rooms are hard to get really good sound in.
You probably saw the show in a big arena - probably not the best for sound, but they can cram a bunch of people in.
Too bad George can't play the dancehalls anymore, but Mike and some of the other Ace in the Hole guys and guests hold court at Nephew's in San Marcos on most Tuesday nights when they're in town.

I seen them in Little Rock last weekend. Excellent show!!! Loved it. George played a good two hours. I noticed his guitar player, Rick McRae, was playing one of the new Brent Mason guitars. He can make it talk. I would definately recommend that you go see George! |

I remember seeing George and the "Ace In The Hole Band" in 1999, before I started playing steel. At the time, Mike Daily was playing an Emmons before he switched to a Zum. Brett, Emmons S-10, Morrell lapsteel, GFI Ultra D-10 |
