I can't place that steeler-though I think I've seen him before.
The real question is-who is that cat playing the 6-string to the left of George? How do I get that combination of Planet of the Apes and lacquered down look on my hair. It really makes it with the outfit!

The picture may be from `The Rutles` Christmas TV show(1975?) where George came on to the intro of `My sweet Lord` and went into `The Pirate Song`. Could be Pete Willsher on steel, I'm not sure. The guy with the six sting is Neil Innes, formerly of `The Bonzos`. The `Rutles` were a spoof Beatles band. Here Are George and Neil;

Good one! If that's not Art Fern-then it has to be his younger brother-Creeping Fern!

Sure looks like Roger to me.
I know he used to hang with the Beatles in London and knew George Harrison.

Ahhhh. My Favorite Fabber with my favorite pedal steel...
Yes, this is Roger Rettig. He sent me this same photo at the end of last month:
"Larry
I don't know if this photo will reach you, but here goes. It's me playing my old brown/birds-eye D10 with George Harrison at a BBC-TV session in 1976. \
Roger R. "
Cheers!

Archie's got the show right (I had to play the 'My Sweet Lord' intro), 'though I don't feel very flattered that he thought I was Pete Willsher!
Craig - I do look a bit like Garcia, don't I? Only thing is, when this was taken, I couldn't play as well as him ...
Larry Bell has an unfair advantage - he tried to borrow that plaid jacket from me only a few weeks ago, so that's how he worked it out.
Larry Chung got a copy of the pic 'cos he loves ZBs.
Yes, that is the very talented Neil Innes playing guitar. This whole band appears in a 'still' photo in the 'Rutles' film, but the drummer, John Halsey (as well as Neil) went on to play drummer 'Barry Wom' in the film. Out of sight behind George is Billy Bremner, a super guitarist and singer, previously with the Pretenders, and now exiled to Sweden for some reason. The bass player, Brian Hodgson, is now with Hogan's Heroes, Albert Lee's Band.
At least no-one's taken issue with my right-hand position....
RR
PS: I wish I still had that guitar! |

I'm blanking on the name,
but it looks ike the cat who played the
old Bigsby at Newbury last year,
and played steel for Elton John.
Dang, the name is slipping out of view.
FOUND IT.

I notice that Roger used an inovation at the time by pluging the lead from the output of his pedal into the hi-hat stand!

It does look a bit fake, but we did play live that day - somewhere behind us is my old Fender Vibrasonic.
I've kept the jacket - if we ever get any hurricane damage, it'll be a change from those blue tarps on all the roofs around here. Mine was the only one that the BBC Wardrobe Department had to make!!!!
By the way, the band's name was 'Fatso' (really!)

I can't see you objection with being confused with the dashing and handsome (so the ladies used to tell me) Mr Willsher. Pete was quite a good player in his day, and along with Gordon Huntley was a pioneer of pedal steel in the UK in the 60's. He was also unique in as much that he never used finger picks which 40 years ago was uncommon. |

Ken
I've just read your post and wanted to assure you that no disrespect was intended toward Pete! What I meant was that it would be hard to mistake one of us for the other, and no one's ever called me 'dashing'!
I knew both Pete and Gordon pretty well in the 'old days' - as you say, they were two of the UK's PSG pioneers.
Kevin: I consider myself very fortunate to have earned my living by playing music for some forty-six years now: I've seen something of the World, and I've got to play with some pretty good guys. I've been very lucky.
Mark: I can't for a moment imagine that you're serious about that autograph , but.....

Hi Roger
Talking of Pete Wilsher... I had lunch with Stuart Cowell the other day....remember him? Good tele player. He has a guitar shop in Ireland now and doesnt look a day older except for a few white hairs!
I'd give my right b-ll-ck to have performed with George Harrison...not to mention Billy Bremner. You sure do have an interesting CV.
All the best and happy new year.

I'm not too sure of who or what you guys can see......... I can only see a Z.B.!!!!!!
The older steel pickers and grinners in the North of England around that time were mainly older Hawaian stylists.
Wally Whyton who used to head the Saturday morning "Skiffle Music" on the B.B.C.in the 50s/60s was a mine of information regarding all the characters that played up and down the country.Does anybody know if he's still around???
