1961, I was 14, and (here in the UK) Billy Fury had a No. 4 hit with "Halfway to Paradise." (Tony Orlando in U.S.) I loved that song and saved from my weekly pocket-money (remember that?) until I had enough to buy the record, took it home, played it, then because of its' "dubious lyrics" my parents sent me straight back to the shop with it !
It would be another 12 years before I was re-united with that melody. I was at a Country Music venue and I happened upon something that, until then, I didn't know existed -- a steel guitar instrumental album. It was by "Cool Steel Man" Lloyd Green, and there on side 1 the second track was "Halfway to Paradise"
I had to have that album !
I had to have it for at least 3 reasons -- 1. it had "that" song on it; 2. it was all steel guitar music! 3. it was by Lloyd Green, who I HAD heard of before.
I'm interested to hear of any other "stories" by all you story-tellers out there ?

1978 My big sister was a fan of "Magna Carta" and on the album "Lord of the ages" there was a fantastic short PSG solo.

Didnt even know what instrument it was, had to ask my older brother.

It was more than 20 years before I could buy my first PSG...got a U12 8+7 Carter...wanted ALL the changes so as to be able to play those beautiful sounds like on the Magna Carta album.

Took me less than an hour after getting the PSG to realize that the solo was a simple figure with NO pedals, dead easy to play....but OH so beautiful.

I think the first record I ever bought, just because of the steel, was the Johnny Rodriguez album with "Pass me by" on it. Just something about that kick off.

well, this isn't fair I realize, but my Mother was a pedal steel player, so there were Jerry Bryd and Speedy West albums that preceeded my arrival, and Pete Drake and Jack Drake were friends of the family so we were always getting Troubador and Pete Drake instrumental Albums in the mail. First purchesd my self is the same Lloyd Green album you mentioned... cool cover with Lloyd in a Tux standing out in by a stream, next were Flying Burritos (Palace of Sin), Poco, Poco, Poco, Poco and Suite Steel (man get this if you don't have it). Someone gave a 8 track tape of the Emmons Jazz album (that dates that).
