The DVDs are now in the hands of Curly's son Carroll, who says he has the facilitites to digitally enhance the sound and picture. However, he says it's going to require a lot of time, and he won't get started until after the first of the year. He wants to press up 500 copies, so there will be more than enough for everybody who wants one.
Meanwhile, JACK LOX'S ORIGINAL VHS MASTERS OF THE CALIFORNIA CONCERT HAVE BEEN FOUND. Carroll has them. We don't uet know if the quality of these tapes is signficantly better than that of the beta copy I made from them, If they are, it means starting over from scratch again. However that might not be necessary,
I had hoped to have this done by now. It's taking far longer than I expected. I hope it will be worth the wait. |

Mike, I can't thank you enough for taking on this project. Curly was a hoot to work with and as you know I am working with him on a portion of this project. I can't wait to see it. Many people didn't get the chance to see Curly play live. This will be a must for everyone's collection. Good luck with DVD. Best to you and yours. Bobby |

Mike, I too am a fan of Curly since I heard the "Travis" album in 1961. He has occupied the top of my hero list since that time. I believe the wait for the best quality is justified and will be ready to place my order as soon as they become available. Thanks again. |

Owing to the low inherent quality of VHS,
the beta masters might be close enough to use.
In general any copy adds artifacts.
VHS to VHS is abysmal.
But copy to a significantly better format,
and in general it stays at the originals level of quality.
IF, the dubs were done with all levels properly set etc. |

Carroll (Curly's son) says he can somehow improve the picture and sound quality. I don't see how that's possible, but the guy produces TV commercials for General Motors, and has access to gazillion dollar state of the art equipment.
Maybe with all that gear he really can improve the quality. It's worth waiting a while to see what he does.
Also, I had envisioned just running off 100 copies for forumites, Carrol wants to make 500 copies and sell them to the general public. Whether or not this is a good idea I cannot say, but it certainly means that there will be enough copies for all of us. |

I'm a television producer by profession and if I've learned anything over the years it's that content is king. VHS is just about the worst source to have to use but if the content is compelling, the audience will watch.
You don't need hugely expensive equipment these days - just the right software. Final Cut Pro's color correction tools are extremely powerful, for example. When I did my Ralph Kolsiana DVD, I had to work with a VHS source 2 generations down shot by an amatuer. We color corrected it and tweaked it in Final Cut, put the VHS footage in a window over a crisp, animated background and used professional packaging. The DVD has a disclaimer explaining the source footage and our belief in the quality of the content. So far, it's been very well received and I can't imagine there aren't many, many steel players who wouldn't want to see Curly in action. I've had a VHS of this concert for years and the guitar player truly matches Curly's great playing. This is going to be a fabulous DVD! Well, I am anxious for this dvd and will buy it no matter the cost.
Bobby Caldwell is right, alot never saw Curly live and Curly's playing will most likely send all of us back to the drawing board. Curly was a great artist and man he could cut it! It is well worth the effort and wait.
GOD bless!

The guitarist Ancy mentions is Johnny Davis, who also plays steel. Johnny played at the California concert. Bobby Caldwell played at the St Louis one. I expet both segements to be included on the DVD.
Johnny will be one of the house band guitarist (Leon Chambers is the other one) at the upcoming Mese AZ show. For me, that's reason enough to attend.
Charlie, the price has not been determined, but whatever it is, it will be worth it. |
