First, we just found out that the person who made the original transfer from tape to DVD did so at the slow speed, with a subsequent drop in picture quality. So we have to start all over from scratch. This means a delay before the DVDs will be available. I don't know how long.
During the concerts, there was a lot of time in between the songs, with Curly talking, smoking, tuning etc. Some people have said they would prefer to have this non-musical material included. To do so would mean that instead of one DVD, the 2 hours of actual playing would be spread out over 2 or 3 disks.
Personally, I am not interested in watching Curly tune, and would rather have all the musical material on one disk, with the extranious stuff edited out.
Would you prefer a single edited disk with just the music?, or a 2 or 3 disk set of the unedited concerts with all the extranious matrerial between the songs included? or both?
If there is enough interest we can do both edited and unedited versions. |

Hi Mike- The music would be viewed many times over, the extra stuff and talking would be neat to have on an extra disc away from the actual performances- maybe it could be offered as an optional 2nd disc for those who'd pay extra for it?

I think it's cool to have the non musical stuff too. It makes it more personal. As long as you can skip to the next scene or chapter with the remote control to skip to the next song, I think it would be cool to have it all. I also can't wait.

Add me to the list voting to keep it all. I agree that it would be great to keep non music stuff as an extra disc though.
Yep, I'll be buying one.

Mike, put me in the "put it all in there" category, that's what the remote is for. I really appreciate your effort and definately put me down for one regardless of the format you end up using. [This message was edited by Bob Watson on 24 November 2005 at 02:01 PM.] |

Mike-- I'll buy it no matter what! But since you asked...I'd start each track with a tune and put the in-between stuff at the end of the track. That would keep continuity but give people the option to move ahead if they like. |

The transfer from tape to DVD is scheuled to take place next wednesday, so we have several days to decide.
It seems that the thing to do would be to make both edited and unedited versions. But let me point out several things.
1- The unedted version would have to be spread over 4 disks, making it all more expensive.
2- A lot of the unedited material is just plain boring. Curly tuning, smoking, drinking etc. Some of what he says to the audience is interesting, but most of it is things like "Here is a song I learned from Jerry Byrd."
3- At the St Louis portion of the show, at one point, people from the audience got up and sang, with Curly backing them up. Trust me on this one- this material is best left to die in obscurity.
4-(and this is really sad,) at one point Wade Ray did a half hour set. However wonderful Ray had been in the past, by 1986, when these were made, he had really lost it and was only a shadow of his former self.
Those of you who remember him in his prime will find it difficult to see how far he fell, and those who are unfamiliar with him will just be turned off by his mediocre performance.
Be all that as it may, There's no reason (other than cost) why I can't make a single disk of the edited material and a boxed set of the unedted material.
I REALLY feel that one disk of the edited material is the way to go, but I will make the boxed set up if enough people say they want it.[This message was edited by Mike Perlowin on 24 November 2005 at 12:57 PM.] |

Mike, after reading your second reply, I think that the edited version would be the way to go. It sounds as if there are too few interesting stories and anecdotes in the unedited version. If you are going to package it with some pics and song lists, maybe you could put some of those stories or anecdotes in the "liner notes", if it is cost effective to do so. I am sure whatever you decide on will be great. Again, your efforts are greatly appreciated. [This message was edited by Bob Watson on 24 November 2005 at 02:17 PM.] |

I know I'm repeating myself, but guys this vidio is great,I think Jim Bob Sedgwick is playing bass,a good drummer, and a phenomenal guitar player, there is no over producing here such as back ground vocals, strings, or keyboards to get in the way of Curlys playing.just bare bone, hard to the core genious of Curly. You can tell he was playing what he wanted to instead of what some producer was telling him to. |

I'd like it all; I never had the pleasure of meeting Curly but I just idolize the guy. I remember the first time, years ago, that I heard him do "The Race is On", on the radio and I couldn't wait to go buy a copy. Maybe if Curly hadn't smoked he might still be around today; I just hope that more videos are made of the heavyweights so future fans have more to choose from. |

Keep the whole thing. The tuning, talking, smoking and all.
I've done some editing myself. It's tempting to go note to note with no banter, and maybe that's best if you're going for sales. If it's history we're talking about then I want every breath.

Maybe just save the best of the non musical stuff? Just enough to let those who never met him, get some idea of Curly's personality?? As for the Wade Ray stuff? Not sure I would include it out of respect. Just my thoughts. Best of luck with your project........bb |

Clearly there are some people who want the edited version and some who want it all. So it appears I'm going to have to do both.
The unedited stuff will be a 3 or 4 disk boxed set. Probably 4.
I'll keep you all informed as to the progress of the project. Right now, as I mentioned, we have to start again from scratch. [This message was edited by Mike Perlowin on 24 November 2005 at 07:04 PM.] |

Thanks to Charles Davidson for the Kudos. Just a warning guys... Unless Mike can do something about the sound quality of the California Country Club segment, the sound quality to put it mildly is not the best. We did have a blast working with Curley. Some of the bass charts were hairy to say the least. I think I only got really lost once. My buddy Johnny Davis made quite a comment on the tape. It was still fun though. It was the only time I was able to work with Curley. (edited for spelling) [This message was edited by Jim Bob Sedgwick on 24 November 2005 at 10:05 PM.] |
