What does it mean when you send your moderator an inoffensive humouristic email, and you get asked for him name (bOb) to be removed from your mailimg list?
I'm sure that some of the other forumites that I sent the same item to, and who enjoyed it very much, must also be very busy people. It's hard to comprehend that there are homourless people amongs musicians. After doing this dasdardly thing I trust that I'm still considered a Forum member. Amazing how quick one's day can turnaround.
Regards,
Nic
I could not reply directly to bOb, as I have removed his name from my list.

I imagine he gets over 100 e-mails a day, and he probably just doesn't like getting more "frivilous" e-mails. Most of us don't. |

No offense meant by b0b I am sure.
I ask people to do this too. I am busy. My In-box runneth over. I don't have time or patience to read or even trash e mails.
And are they all REALLY humorous?

Nic,
I thought it was pretty funny but why not just post it in "Humor"? |

I even asked my mother-in-law to remove me from her list. I have to respond to hundreds of emails a day. Frivolous ones, even well intentioned and from people I like, can get annoying. Don't take it personally.
BTW, did you ask Bob's permission to put him on the list in the first place? If you send out to your list more than once a month, it can get pretty annoying quickly. I got on an old teacher's political list. and it doesn't come out that often but I delete it as soon as it hit the inbox. |

I might also add that this sounds like a personal matter between you and Bob and IMHO an inappropriate posting to a public forum dealing with pedal steels. |

IMO getting email from someone I have built a friendship with on a forum is fine. But "funny", "joke", "cartoon" and other emails from anyone who has just gotten my name from a board is pure and simple spam. That person gets added to my spam filter, never to be heard from again.
It's rude and a bad idea. It's *always* been one of the "rules" of the internet - don't send unsolicited email unless there's a real purpose to it. Jokes and other junk do not qualify. |

Yeah, don't get all paranoid, Nic. b0b actually did you a courtesy by sending you a personal request to remove him. He could have just blocked you without ever saying anything. If he hasn't blocked you, you can still exchange emails if something important comes up. And it doesn't mean he has no sense of humor. It just means his inbox is overloaded and he chooses to get his humor on his own time elsewhere. Y'all make nice and move on. |

All of the above, plus this. When people put you on a open-email-address list, it opens you up to everybody else on the list, and then the people who are on their lists, then the people who are on their lists, and so on. It doesn't take very long before you can be on tons of unwanted lists.
So if I must send an email out to a large number of people that I know want to hear from me, I put the email addresses in the BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) box, which hides the addresses from the other recipients. I always ask people to do this on any non-workplace-oriented list I'm on, or please remove me from the list - even if I want to be on the list. Occasionally, someone is offended - so be it.
I wouldn't take this personally at all. Spam is a very serious problem, and some of the countermeasures are completely automated. |

Nic, don't think b0b's being rude. It can get to be a hassle keeping the inbox empty when "well meaning" friends issue shotgun e-mails. b0b's got lots of "well meaning" friends (at least 5000 of them anyway), so his in-box is gonna fill up fast unless he keeps the situation under control. Don't take offense, perhaps you were unaware of the situation. |

Ray, and the rest of the crew,
Thanks for taking the time out to point certain things out. I do feel a bit sheepish for handling the situation the way I did. I intended no malice, and do understand. The offending item (?) were only sent to guys with whom I had built up a good rapport re steel matters, and not as a general mailing list. If anyone took exception to it, I duly apologise. Won't happen again.
Regards,
Nic

I routinely ask to be deleted from any unsolicited email list. The content is usually irrelevant, but in this particular case I believe it was a Word document which I would not download and open anyway. Microsoft Word files can contain viruses. I never open them.
I would have simply blocked Nic's email if I hadn't recognized his name and the names of other steelers in the To: list.
