Did anyone else watch the Johnny Cash tribute on CBS last night? I, for one, thought it was great! Brad Paisley opened the show doing Folsum Prison. A highlight for me was Norah Jones doing "Home of the Blues"..the pedal steel worked beautifully with her voice and they gave a nice shot of the player but who was it?? Norah was then joined by Kris Kristopherson (sp?) doing "I Still Miss Someone". Kris also did "Sunday Morning Coming Down" with the Foo Fighters(!), (I'm sure someone will complain about that) Kris spoke of how Johnny helped him so much in his career, and came off very gracious and "together". Jerry Lee Lewis performed and the show ended with "Will the Circle Be Unbroken". Sure, it was a promo for the upcoming film. I thought it was nicely done. Who was the steeler???

I too did enjoy the show last night. Allow me to chime in on how well Norah Jones voice sounded with the steel. "Home Of The Blues" is one of my favorite Cash songs. I am pretty much a straight-up traditional country guy, but I did enjoy most of the takes on the tunes. I can't help but like Jerry Lee, and when they showed that picture of the "Million Dollar Quartet" on the scene behind him, you couldn't help but think of all the greats that have passed on. All in all a great show, I do have kind of a tough time listening to Montgomery Gentry though.

Kevin,
I agree with all you said. The show really jogged my memory and pulled on my heart.
Johnny is truly one of the all time greats. |

I cought part of the show but unfortunately didn't get to see all of it.
Too bad they didn't let Kristofferson do the song he wrote by himself (nothing about who or what group did the song with him, just that he should have been allowed to do his song alone).
I'll be working Saturday night with Tommy Cash (Johnny's younger brother). Tommy will be doing his Johnny Cash tribute show - and it will have lots of steel in it. Tommy gives me free rein and always tells me "play as much as you want". |

Wow Jack, what great stuff to get to play steel on. My hat's off to you and everyone in the band there. If I lived just a little closer I'd hightail over to catch your show.

"I still miss someone" is not on the show play list. But, I get to do the "horns" on Ring of Fire (Bb for those keeping score). Tommy has me use a phase shifter on that one (I use the phase shifter in my POD XT). [This message was edited by Jack Stoner on 18 November 2005 at 06:12 AM.] |

I missed the Tribute to Johnny Cash, but like many of you, his great music has been in my head since I was a little boy. I sure am looking forward to the up coming movie about him.
GOD bless!

I stand corrected. It was indeed Martina who sang " I Still Miss Someone". I thought Nora did a song with Kris when he came out.
Boy, guess my memory is in geezerville!

In case you missed her, the girl singing backup to Martina is the pride of Southeast Texas, Jennifer Wrinkle from Vidor!! She is a super fiddle player. |
