| She is on CMT as I write this tonight. It's really this simple. I want to marry her! She is singing Patsy, Merle, Tammy and more. That's it. I'm in love and it's for real this time. By the way....darn good steel player also...who is that guy? |

| Wayne is definitely a great player. When Martina sang "Today I Started Lovin' You Again", I was amazed because the steel solo Wayne played was beautiful! Wayne also played some good lap steel on Hank Williams' song "You Win Again". My favorite song that Martina sang on the show last night was Tammy Wynette's "Til I Can Make It On My Own". | Well here's positive proof that Martina can't sing country. Her phrasing is just not there. Patty Loveless blows her away. So does Lee Ann Womack, Elizabeth Cook, and Gretchen Wilson. Martina is a great screamer and rock singer. I even like it when she screams her prime key note at the end her songs for that big finish. Seen her a couple of times. Great pop singer. But for country, it doesn't cut it. Give me Mandy Barnett with Stu Basore behind her. That'll make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. If y'all are talking about the show on Sound Stage on PBS, that was Paul Franklin in the first half of the show where she sang the traditional songs. Paul was perfection, as always. Unbelievable sustain he gets. The second half was her regular band, Wayne Dahl doing a fine job on that Carter. As far as her voice, she may not be the greatest but I loved it. I was not a big fan until I saw the show, but I am now. And you're right, she's absolutly beautiful.
Oops,I just noticed you said CMT. I should have read it closer I guess.

| Kevin, I did listen to Mandy, although I didn't know who she was. Sounds really great and definately my style. There are still a few around that can sing great. Dawn Sears is also another favorite of mine, but I'll listen to Martina singing country anytime. |

Just got through listening to the first part of Soundstage on PBS featuring Martina McBride. I should call it the "Franklin portion" of the show. Lots of good steel by Mr. Franklin. Even got called by name. Very unusual. Watch your listings in your TV guide. Like a dummy I didn't record it. Maybe I might have a second chance.
It looked like Paul had a RKV. Check it out and give a 2nd opinion.
Give the show a look. It kept my smiling for about 40 minutes.

| Kevin, you are right on target! I always thought I was the only one with that opinion. Screaming has always been her way to hit high "powerful" notes, I never bought it. Also her phrasing as you mentioned and any stylistic bending of notes etc., is non existent. BTW, for great singing check out Shelby Lynne's early country stuff on Epic! | I agree with you guys on Dawn Sears and Shelby Lynne. Monsters. Martina is a GREAT singer. I just think for traditional country it takes alot of subtle phrasing. I saw Stu Basore with Mandy Barnett at the Opry. As far as country goes I thought I went to heaven. Their interplay of singing, phrasing, and playing tore my heart out. | I'm not absolutely certain what qualities one must have to be a great "country" singer as opposed to some other kind, or even sure as to what authority you need to judge whether someone else is "country" enough or not. That said, I think Martina showed a good deal of integrity in singing the songs in her own voice, rather than trying to add "twang" to her voice and sing her R's through her nose as do so many others who are trying to convince people that they were born in West Virginia, wore rags to school, Daddy beat me when he wasn't mining coal etc. I would rather listen to Martina sing just about anything at all than listen to rich suburban kids twang about how "country" they are and how much they love their truck as a way to buy a Ferrari, because they weren't talented enough to make it in the world of exploitative schlock-rock. Of course she goes for the big rock notes, that's how you do it these days, Loretta Lynn or Tammy Wynette would be doing the same thing in her shoes, or else they'd still be singing in a bar in West Virginia. |

I saw the show on CMT too. Martina can sing any style of music, especially traditional country with grace, ease, pitch and sound amazingly right on, beautiful.
Wayne sounded right on too! Wayne's one of those young players whose been paying his dues for along time. He's got a great boss and she knows how lucky she is too!
I'm grateful to Wayne for introducing me to Martina backstage at the Opry a few years ago. It was definitely one highlight in my life I'll never forget.

Hmm, the previous post is a bit confusing.
This show aired in the Austin area last night, and I thought it was great. I really liked the first part of the show with Paul, Eddie Bayers, Steve Gibson, etc. I had never heard of the piano player before, is he blind? He looked very much like a younger Pig Robbins.
The second part of the show wasn't really my favorite style of music, but there was some really good steel guitar in it too. Thats more than you can say for a lot of new country acts.

| I think that some of the subtle inflection you guys are not hearing is due to the lack of reverb. If you noticed, her voice was cut flat ( no effects or reverb) I think the actual album will have a much better sound. And she does sing as true as a bell. JMO |
