I had some wonderful fried shrimp for lunch today at a local seafood restaurant, The Oyster Bar. The owner is a huge fan of Texas Swing music. He has a great selection of cd's and keeps the music playing all day. Today we got to listen to Bob Dunn playing with Milton Brown. We also listened to Adolph Hoffner. I don't know if it was the San Antonions or the Pearl Wranglers. It sounded pretty old, so I would bet it was the San Antonions. Anybody have any idea who would have been playing steel with him in the 1940's?

Lee,

It would be Adolph Hofner's brother Emil Hofner (Bash) on steel. He was his steel player for the entire band duration. I love to play that band on "Swingin' West," www.swinginwest.com

I don't know which steeler's he was using but until recently I played in a band, here in San Antionio, with his youngist daughter, Darlene. Most of the time the whole Hofner family would come to our gigs. The whole family is very talented.

Mike is right, it was Emil (Bash) Hofner, Adolph's brother on steel. A great mix of musical cultures, Czech, German, Mexican, Mountain String Band (Bluegrass), Swing, Jazz, and Western Swing. There is a CD out of the San Antonians has about 25 songs all great.

I would like to hear some of Bob Dunn's work. Read about him. I understand he thought the steel guitar should be a jazz instrument. Sounds like my kind of guy...bb

Bobby - This restaurant owner had a boxed set of Milton Brown cd's. I think there were 4 cd's in the set. He said he ordered the set through Barnes & Noble.

There is also a short documentary movie on Adolph Hofner that I had the honor of being interviewed in. I think that all Adolph Hofner fans should consider it. I have a review of the DVD or VHS in the review section of my "Swingin' West" web site. www.swinginwest.com
In addition, my home page of my web site is linked to the producer who is selling the video for a very small fee.

My wife and I and another couple are going out for shrimp tonight. I wonder who we will get to hear this time.
