Just heard Gib on sn Cassandra Wilson album
Playing some great pedal steel.
Does ayone know some more playing of this man?

Great player. My first exposure was his work with the Holmes Brothers. Anybody who thinks pedal steel is for country only should listen to him, especially his blues playing. He plays it all, and well.

Donny, thanks for the link. I was unaware of the accident that cost him four fingers. I wondered why I haven't seem him the last few years. But from the recent cuts I listened to, it sounds like he's back with a vengeance.

Gib is one seriously incredible player. He was one of the very first steel players that I ever heard take that instrument to the next level in the jazz vein. And one of the first steel players I ever heard play Parker's "Donna Lee" on that horn. And I mean he played it right, then blew doors on the solo section. He was also one of the first (and only) steelers I ever heard play through Coltrane's "Giant Steps" with the same command. Unreal.

When I was a teen, I'd go to Gib's apartment and we'd stack on several Coltrane albums and just sit there and listen to them until the sun came up. He was one of the very first players to introduce me to playing over alernate chords. And he helped me to get back on track many times when I'd hit those musical brick walls of frustration.

Gib played some with my band back in the early 80's and the stuff he would come up with on country songs was totally unique and very cool. Completely out of the box yet fit so well. He is definitely one of the most musical guys I've ever been around.

We did a session together about a year ago and it was great to see and hear him again.

His web site is great and gives out a lot more information on what he's doing now. Gib is definitely an inspiration, and to see how he's endured and prevailed can only make one feel great about not only the power of music, but the human spirit. I've always loved his playing.

I can't tell you how happy I am to see Gib back in action. He is one of the greatest ever. He hit NYC like a 10 ton musical gorrilla a while back.

Gib, if you see this get on this forum and tell us losers whats what !

those downloads are killer. looks like a 12 string carter. love to know what copedant he was using to blow through gaint steps and donna lee
