Well Joe Nichols played our little county fair tonight here in eastern Montana. When I first heard of him, I hoped he was related to Roy, but I guess not. He sounded pretty good I understand, but for some reason he only had a small band with him and no steel player! How dare he? I didn't attend the concert myself, but I guess he sounded like he does on the records (which is always good), was very personable, signed autographs, and was seen in the lounge of the local Best Western where he was staying smoking and chatting with the locals. I wonder... Does he not have a steel player, or did he come to town with a skeleton crew?
Why in the world would a country entertainer not have a steel man?
Also, my son bought an Eagles DVD for me for my birthday. It was recorded live in Austrialia in 2004. Although Joe Walsh doesn't play steel, they are an unbelievable band. Imagine what would Hotel California might have been with some steel guitar influence?

I have seen many TOP Stars travelin' between shows to small gigs with a SKELETON band as you put it..
Perhaps the trip to the Montana small County Fair was cost prohibitive. Yes we as Steel Players always want to see the Steel Player first..but somehow I think the folks at the County Fair and especially those stayin at the local Motel were pretty pleased Joe made the trip...
I read a few weeks back where someone commented that they saw the Wrights on the Opry with forumite Eddy Lang on Steel..the comment was something along the lines of "The Girl singer should have let the Steel player have the whole ride"....The Girl singer is ONE OF THE WRIGHTS...The Steel player is on the OPRY because of HER....
Problem is these shows are not about the Steel players...
Joe Nichols always has a top notch pro Steeler with him on his tours and especially on the Opry..many times this is Terry Crisp..

Don't be too hard on Joe Nichols for not carrying a steel player with him to the gig. I'm sure if he had things his way there would be one in the band at all times. If you want to place blame, do it towards today's Country music (no flames, please) audience that doesn't show enough enthusiasm for the truly good-for-the-soul music that Joe sings.
Joe tours endlessly (go look at his site--booked solid), records on the few days he's not, and gets too little time with his little girl that he dearly loves. He's got a big heart, a great set of values, a refreshing sense of genuine humility, and a true appreciation for the great Country music of the past. The guy just doesn't deserve any flak, in my book.
Maybe you could ask to fill in the steel parts next time he plays your town. |

That is too bad Drivvy. I to, am very disappointed when true country acts don't have a steel.
We had Big & Rich, Terri Clark, Craig Morton and Sugarland at the Montana State Fair. Only Terri and Big & Rich (go figure) had steel. I didn't see Big & Rich due to another obligation (I probably wouldn't have gone anyway since I have already seen the Wizzard of OZ) but Terri's show was outstanding. I was disappointed that Craig didn't have steel but I understand that some of the lesser known acts have to cut costs where they can. He did have an awesome fiddle player.
Our band was a few miles up the road at Forsyth for a street dance. Had a great time but I sure would have like to seen Joe. |

I can promise you guys that Joe Nichols likes the steel guitar very much. Before he moved to Nashville he was a performer on our "Little O' Oprey" show in West Fork and he visited us Christmas before last as he just walked in without us knowing he was even in the area. Of course we got him on stage to sing a couple of songs. He did a great job on "Sing Me Back Home" and had a big smile on his face thru the steel solo. He is a great guy and a real Country fan and performer. I suppose in order to play some smaller venues he must cut back on expenses in order to do them and come out. I for one am very proud of Joe and the fact that at one time I got to back him on our Opry show.
He is the real deal!!! On the previous post Terry Clark was mentioned. We at the Oprey are proud of the fact that Jenee Keener, Terry's fiddle player grew up on "The Little O' Oprey". She did good.

Ken,
You were almost in my neighbor hood in Forsyth.
I didn't mean to discredit Joe. I think he's one of the best contemporary artists today. I rate him right behind Alan Jackson, which is why it seemed such a shame that he didn't have a steelman. I think everyone around here thought he was a good guy too, Jerry. He was just hanging out in the lounge of the hotel chatting with local folks. They loved that.

Joe, you must have gotten some bad information about the Joe Nichols' concert. The sound production that did the concert are friends of mine. They said that he had a seven piece band to include steel. It was a great show. Thought you might want to know. |

Ken,
Well maybe I did get some bad info. I guess since I wasn't there personally, I shouldn't have said anything at all. One should never go on hearsay alone. Like assuming, hearsay can get you in trouble.
I'm happy to hear he had a steel guitar. After all, whats country without a steel?
