Last night I had the priviledge of providing sound for the Light Crust Dough Boys in Quitman Texas. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the MSA set up on stage. I set up my sound and waited for the band to return for sound check. I was really pleased when I say Mr Maurice Anderson was the player of that MSA. I hoped when I saw the guitar that I could hear some steel and they made me very happy. They featured Mr Anderson several times. They even told me I did a good job on sound. I went home a with a smile on my face for sure. It was great to hear Mr Anderson play again.

Thanks for the report James.
Can you tell us more? Who are the members of the Doughboys today? What material did they do? Are they planning any more shows?

I'm firmly convinced that Reece is the world's greatest steel player. While that may be open to debate, there's no doubt he is in the uppermost echelon along with Buddy, Lloyd, Paul Franklin and the late greats Curly Chalker, Jimmy Crawford, Jerry Byrd and Jimmy Day.

I think his "Universal Direction" gospel album is the single finest steel guitar recording ever made, (and bear in mind that I generally don't care for orchestras and choruses, and I am not a Christian and the religious aspect of the album is lost on me.) I give it my highest possible recommendation.

There are still some copies if the 2 CDs of his early work available. I suggest you all grab them while you can.

John, I do not know all the members. There were 2 fiddles, drum, lead guitar, bass and Mr Reece on Steel. I think the lead player was a guy named Elliot, he played with them for over 25 years and there was a fiddler whose name was Jim Baker.I will find out the names of the band if I can. For some reason, Quitman is now the home of the Light Crust Dough Boys Musuem. They played a variety of classic country and western swing. Songs like Faded Love, Tumblin Tumbleweeds, Cool Water, Steel Guitar Rag, Take Me Back to Tulsa.

and...FWIW...Quitman, Texas is hometown for Sissy Spacek who played Loretta Lynn's character in the movie, Coalminer's Daughter.

Good music connects.

Yes Ron, Sissy grew up here. I grew up in Mineola, 9 miles away and never saw her. I know a couple of older guys who dated her. The lady next to me in the office took guitar lessons from her and my wife sold her clothes at a store in Mineola when Sissy would come back for visits. Noble Willingham from Walker Texas Ranger was from Mineola. He and my father in law worked in a feed store in high school. Anyway, I saw the Light Crust Dough Boys when I was about 9, of course none of those guys were there last night. It will be interesting to see what the musuem and hall of fame has to offer. The spokesman for the group said last night they would be "based" out of Quitman and looked forward to performing here anytime they had a chance or an invitation.

Hi Rick, Everything is great up north. The show with Maurice was great. Wish you had been here. I am working a plan to get you and your picking buddies up here to jam with us in the next few weeks. I thought maybe we could do a Friday night, maybe the weekend of Labor Day. Check that against your schedule and let me know. I will check with my band meanwhile.
To John Ummel, the members of the LCDB are as follows, Art Greenhaw/bass, John Walden & Jim Baker/fiddle, Jerry Elliot/lead gtr,Dale Cook/drums and of cource Maurice on Steel. I do not know about their performing schedule.

James B....Thank you for your kind words. I have been playing with the Light Crust Doughboys occasionally for many years.

It was an honor for me to be in Quitman Texas last Wednesday evening to be a part of the opening of the Light Crust Doughboy museum.

It was also a pleasure meeting you, and as I told you that evening, all the band was very impressed with the excellent sound you provided.

Hope to see you there again next year.

Mike P....I'm at a loss for words concerning your post, which for me is rare.

Reece - Are you regular with the Doughboys now? I talked to Billy Simmons about a month before he passed. What a guy! As I told him many times before, he was one of my biggest musical inspirations in the Memphis days. BTW: I hope to play one of your axes one of these days. Hugh

Hugh....Yes, I have filled in after Bill when available to do so, but no one could ever take his place.

They are a wonderful bunch of guys with a great tradition, and a huge number of loyal and enthusiastic followers.

I would be honored were you to have the opportunity to play one of the new MSA guitars. If there's anything I can do to make that happen, let me know.

Mr Reece, I have heard you play numerous times at the Texas show but never got around to meeting you. You are ever bit the nice guy I have heard you are. Thanks for the compliments from you and the other band members on the sound. I enjoy doing that as a hobby along with playing steel. I will look forward to seeing you next year, in Dallas or back in Quitman.
