Has this tune ever been recorded on steel? I've loved ever since I was a wee boy. http://www.amazon.com...
Cheers, Arch.

Doug Beaumier has it in one of his steel courses, and Jerry Byrd did it on his "Burning Sands" album.

Sounds like a great tune for the second Vandura's album to me. Not quite Spaghetti Western, but close. Gary could make it sing on his old D-8 Rick.

Where's Brandin when we need him???

I learned the Tune from the Jerry Byrd Album and it's one of my favorite tunes to play. I play it just about every time I sit down at my Fender T–8 Custom and it's on the C-Diatonic Tuning, which is also a favorite of mine! I've been playing it for quite a few years.

Archie
That version of Baz's is beautiful, but it's Strangers In The Night, not the song of question, Strangers On The Shore, which was a hit for clarinetist Acker Bilk.

I'm pretty sure Russ Hicks recorded it on an album back in the late '70's or early '80's, I'm not sure, but I'm 99% sure that song is on the album. Unfortunately, I don't have the album.

I'm slow today, Herb. I'm that used to hearing it with a clarinet I hardly noticed.
What a numpty!

Back in the early fifty's, when Jerry Byrd and the Harmonicats were all over the jukeboxes, I
heard my first , and finest version, which was also on the jukes, Pete Fountain and his clarinet. I have several of his albums, but never again heard him play it. Of course, I have Jerry's version, but since I can't do his version justice, I pretend I am doing Pete's version..

Acker Bilk had beautiful clarinet vibrato on Stranger on the Shore, it's a must hear for those who appreciate a fine touch, like Herb said I think it was him who made it a hit.

Acker Bilk was on the same label with EMI as myself..

The hit record of Stranger on the Shore on Columbia Records DB 4750 "Stranger on the Shore" is a piece for clarinet written by Acker Bilk for his young daughter and originally named "Jenny" after her. It was subsequently used as the theme tune of a BBC TV programme entitled Stranger on the Shore.

The track, performed by Bilk with backing by the Leon Young String Chorale, was released as a single on Columbia Records DB 4750 in October 1961, with the label of the single openly proclaiming "Theme from the B.B.C. TV. Series". The B-side was "Take my Lips". The single became a phenomenal success, topping the NME singles chart and spending nearly a year on the Record Retailer Top 50. It is the UK's biggest-selling instrumental single of all time, and appears 58th in the official UK list of best-selling singles issued in 2002.

Makes me want to dust off my old clarinet every time I hear it. A timeless instrumental classic, no doubt.

Here's a present of a MIDI File of the SONG.. you can turn off the clarinet track and use it as a backing track with my FULL permission..(I tried to keep to the original as closely as possible, but the string parts were a little awkward)
http://www.waikiki-islanders.com/assets/multimedia/midi/shore2.mid

there are also more files i've done and they are yours for free. here..

You could injure your wrist trying to do the Acker Bilk vibrato on steel guitar.
