Several years ago there was a steeler who played the ISGC in St. Louis named Wally Murphy. He played extremely fast and played the theme to the "Lone Ranger". I was riding down the road today and he came across my mind and I was just wondering what he is doing these days. |

"The William Tell Overture"
Does he have any recordings available, other than the record album that the WT Overture is on? |

Wally is an outstanding musician whom I met when we played in the same town (Marion Illinois) on a motel circuit. He played in St. Louis for a long time. I think he also played for "Asleep at the Wheel". Correct me if I am wrong, but I think he is Jim Murphys brother. |

Yes, he played for a time with AATW and is Big Jim Murphy's half-brother. |

Wally was always one of my favorite players in St. Louis at the conventions. He not only is a great player, he is also a good singer and always had a knockout band. I have a couple of old recordings of his, but I don't think he's recorded anything in the last several years.

I met Wally back in the mid-’60's at a club in Phila. Pa. He was working with A.A.T.W. and I think he was playing a Deckley D–11 or D–12 at the time.

Just a great post Paul. I was looking at a web site the other day, forget which one. But it had Wally on it. Seems he cut his hair, and it is "Grey" in spots...i did a double take...i still see this kid with long hair, playing that "Space Song Theme"..one of my hero's..and could sure sing Roy Orbison stuff..also played a Williams Keyless D11 i think it was...

Last time remember seeing WM he was on Austin City Limits playing a D-12 red ZB Custom, I think it was. Unbelieveable! This was years ago. Whoever was singing just basically turned him loose and man I couldn't believe it. He was faster than fast. Till this day I don't think I've heard anybody that fast and clean. |

I had the pleasure of seeing Wally at a club in St. Louis, minus the lead guitar player. It was just Wally on steel, a drummer, and a bass player. Wally covered the lead guitar stuff extremely well. Quite an amazing thing to see. Sure made me appreciate his talent even more. |

Wally and my son, Herby Wallace III, who plays drums are working together 3 nights a week at a club just north of Orlando, FL. The club is called Post Time and is on Hwy 17-92. Wally is also an excellent vocalist in addition to being a monster player. My son says Wally sings quite a bit at the club. I first met Wally in St. Louis in the early seventies when he was just learning to play.

I remember back to somewhere around 1980, and watching Wally play with AATW at a small club near Hershey, Pa. After the show was over, Wally was kind enough to show me a few things that I was having trouble with in "My Mother's Eyes". I was also able to hang out with the rest of the band and have a few beers before they had to leave. I hope that I will be fortunate enough to hear him play again someday. |
