I am just curious as to who the steeler was that recorded Cal Smith's "The Lord Knows I'm Drinkin'" ? I did some research and it listed three Steelers that recorded on the Album that it's on. The three were:

1. Pete Drake
2. Weldon Myrick
3. Jimmy Crawford

I would just like to know which one of the three named above actually recorded that particular song. Any help would be appreciated.

John Hughey was on the original cut, but I believe I know the album your speaking of. That was a record that Pete Drake produced in about 1980 I believe. I think its Crawford on that cut.

Did he ever use Buddy Charleton? They were both members of the Texas 2 X 4's, I'm sorry, I meant Troubadours, with Ernest Tubb at one time.

Only when he was doing the Troubador albums. His recording of "They'll Never Ever Take Her Love From Me" was on one of them, and it featured BC. That's one of my all-time favorite country records.

I produced the Album "THE LORD KNOWS I'M DRINKING' for Cal on MCA Records and I believe Weldon was playing steel on it. I used Weldon a lot with Cal Smith.

From a prior post on the Forum, Buddy Charleton did play on some of Cal's first recordings on Kapp around 1967 after he left ET. The records that Buddy played on that come to mind are "The Only Thing I Want (Just Went Home)", and "I'll Just Go on Home". Both are great songs in the traditional country sense with Buddy C featured.

Well the Legend Walter Haynes has spoken, but I still believe it was John Hughey, although I was not there by the console. I know Weldon was on about everything else including Country Bumpkin. I am huge fan of Mr Haynes though, as a player and a producer. The man created some classic records.

...John once told me it was him...I asked him.Walter-whoever played on it,it's a great record!You produced SEVERAL of my favorite records...they always had plenty of steel on'em-good work!

Hey Guys,

The comments about Mr Haynes are so true. Great player, producer, record company executive and a darn good songwriter. At several steel shows, I have mentioned how his song, "Girl on the Billboard" kept Del Reeves(and me)working for a long time. I know this thread was not about Walter, but he is a true legend and a real gentleman too. I always look forward to seeing and visiting with him.

Why don't you ask Johnny Cox? He worked for Cal Smith in the ’70's and I’m sure he knows the answer.

Mike Cass knew it was John Hughey as he was working with Cal on the road and Smiley called John Hughey and confirmed it so there is your answer.

Gentlemen, It's been about 35 years since Cal recorded "THE LORD KNOWS I'M DRINKIN' and when you get my age senior moments happen more frequently. John Hughey is a great steel player and if he said he was on the record thats good enough for me!! I apoligize for such a short memory. John played on a lot of sessions for me when he was not on the road with Conway. I do remember tho that 'THE LORD KNOWS I'M DRINKIN' AND "SATIN SHEETS" were both in the top five songs for that year------

Gee fella's...I sure do appreciate the clarification to my question...My philosiphy (sp)...When in doubt, just ask the forum. I, in my wildest dreams would have never guess my good friend John Hughey. I really was not sure BUT always wanted to find out. Ok Walter as for Satin Sheets was that Lloyd?

I sure ain't Walter by no stretch of the imagination but I would bet the farm it was Lloyd on Satin Sheets. How about it, Walter? Michelle says you have got to get yourself down here to Lois' place and suffer through my picking. It would be such an honor to have you play my GFI. Hope to see you soon and I am glad to hear you are doing so much better and only have to use the walker going up and down stairs. Hang in there buddy.

Mr. Stettner, I appreciate your affirming Lloyd on Satin Sheets. With my luck, I was beginning to fear it would be Little Roy Wiggins or somebody. Certainly no slur on Roy, he was a huge hero of mine.

Lloyd Green played steel on "Satin Sheets" and what a great job he did on that record as well as all the others he played on. It's good to know that he is doing sessions again, go get 'em Lloyd---------
