I read this phrase in a post or reply made by our friend Bobbe maybe a month or more ago...

This sentence was taken verbatim from his post... I must say that these few words have had a more profound impact on me than anything else I've ever read on the forum in all the time I've been here.

I relate so totally to those words. I can honestly say, I have loved some stuff that was badly played, out of tune, shrill, muddy, wierd , just because it was done on a steel guitar by a steel guitarist...

Every day I am a fan of someone new. I have heard some VERY rudimentary playing on this forum,[I include my clips in that number} yet have been thrilled by it

Those that posted gained a fan and friend for life.

I have heard some very highly advanced playing by some guys here, loved it just as much as I loved the real basic clips... Its all steel you know?. ..
I have heard some stuff thats a little "out there" in the opinion of some people.. my friend Mike Perlowin's CD's come to mind...
I LOVED what he played and the WAY it was played!!!
I could not imagine what kind of sharp mind could put those CD's together... Its all done on a steel...
Heard a few basic country clips sent via email by a short timer, loved it as much as I loved Mike's very unique style.

I am also a longtime lead guitarist and vocalist, but am not now and have NEVER been a fan of all guitarists OR vocalists...

Like Bobbe however, I don't think I have ever heard a steel guitar, or talked to a person that could play it even just a little, that I have disliked..
Like Bobbe, I am a BIG fan of ALL steel guitarists... just wanted to share this..

Count me in as a steel groupie.

I've played lap a few years; tried out a PSG, and might do it again. This mechanical marvel fascinates me, and to hear an artist at the wheel slays me.

And hey, Bob, you're not bad yourself (understatement).

Bob, If you love stuff that was badly played, out of tune, shrill, muddy, and weird, then you would absolutely love my playing. I also play the violin too.

A steel player will make me like bands I wouldn't usually like and make me buy C.D.s I wouldn't normally buy. (Funk, for example) On the other hand, I often end up yelling at the singer, "Will ya shut up and let me hear the steeler?!" (I know, it's wrong.) And while I have heard riffs I found predictable--even from my hero, Greg Leisz (I blame Loudon III)--my theory is that pedal steel is such a difficult instrument, a player needs to be pretty good just to play out.

On the other hand, while technical perfection impresses me, I am more of a sucker for something original in the voicing or the riff or whatever.

Nice post Bob. I often read your posts as well as a lot of others on the Forum. I don't find myself posting a lot as a rule, but I wanted to say you can count me as one of YOUR fans for 2 reasons. One, your playing (I've heard the too few clips I've seen posted), and two, the way you "wear it on your sleeve".

i am just as biga' Bob C fan...as i am Bobbe S fan....just the way i am. EVERYONE! plays better then i do. Seems no matter WHO i hear play...just seems everyone has been there..done that. But that is the way i like things..If you can play steel guitar even a little, i give you credit, and i try my best to appreciate, and encourage all players, no matter what skill level. I get young Forum members just starting out on C6th, write me with all kinds of questions. If i can help anyone, with C6th, i am just a click away. On the other hand...DO NOT try to impress me..it can't be done. I have already heard the best, many many times!

I always enjoy reading your comments. Dont underestimate yourself. You have a lot on the ball my friend.

Yeah I've become one of the many fan's of Bob C and a Bobbe S and I really like what George Redmon had to say.
I know I played in the bars and honkytonks for years, then I met Jesus Christ and his saving grace and I just really want to play my steel for the Lord.
I am injoying discovering, or should I say, spending more time on the C-6 side of my guitar.
Once again I mention Mr George Redmon, for like he said I also would give what kwowledge I have away just to see some one take up and interest in Steelguitar.

Oh well how we love our Steelguitar

I second the motion here. Steel guitar is just the coolest sounding insrument of all. In tune, out of tune, doesnt bother me much either, Just a great sound anyway you look at it. bob

I agree, I like all steel players also. It's just that until the internet came along it seemed to take longer for everybody to keep up with what the current trends were in the steel world. When I got started in 71' on pedal steel there wasn't a whole lot out there to learn from other than record albums but I did manage to find a Neil Flanz instruction record somewhere and wore it out. Nowadays, just turn the computer on and it's at your fingertips. This is wonderful for all us steel players!

I am also a fan of all steel guitar in all its forms. I have always loved it, I only wonder why it took so long for me to realize that I could do the pedal thing. I guess we're only limited by our own imaginations.

Picture a small town in anywhere New York.

Camera pans in on Bob Carlucci's smilling face,eyes closed,teeth clinched tightly,his left hand grasping something cold,round and strangely familiar like the hand of a man holding to the railing in the Titanic's final moments. The fingers of his right bent in some grotesque odd fashion, something resembling an eagles claw tearing at it's prey in a maddening frenzy and the words I am a fan attempting to escape his lips like light from a black hole.

SUDDENLY...a warm,yet not uncomfortable feeling like a gentle summer rain draws Bob back from his shadowy abyss to the present.His eyes slowly focus on what appears to be a large spinning object just above his head.Bright smilling faces all dressed in white are patting his worn furrowed brow gently saying,Bob,let go of the bedrail you've wet yourself again, now let's change those pajama's.As the last attendant leaves, she pauses to turn off the ceiling fan.

Steve, first of all,for the short time I have been a forum member I have instantly become a fan of Bob Carlucci.I find his posts somewhat thought provoking,funny and informative for the most part.

The attempt was mere tongue and cheek humor extracted from some simple lines he used in his initial post and a follow up post.I truly hope I get the chance to meet him some day as I somehow think he probably understands my twisted since of humor as I do to his.

I never really thought about it, until this post popped up. But, yes, I'm a fan of all steel players too. I always gravitate towards a band with a steel player, to listen to his sound. I don't find a lot of interest in other music,when a steel is around. And, the steel player, no matter what caliber he is, always entertains me. I find most steel players to be genuinely accomodating guys. No matter what level, steel talk is steel talk. It's a great club to belong to.
I do remember, though, when it wasn't so friendly and open. There were a few guys, I met, that had noticable chips on their shoulders. Learning was a huge curve, in the beginning. It was a "secretive club". You had to have a key to get in. Thank God, that is all behind us, now... So, I will continue to be a fan to all my steel playing buddies and hope to make new ones in the future.

Well, this is "THE STEEL GUITAR FORUM!"
I'd assume we all shared a fondness for the instrument, as well as those who play it.
