After reading Mike Perlowins post, I was wondering how many records you cut and if you would be so kind to allow them to be reproduced? I only have three and waiting on Mikes CD's. You must consider sharing your musical endeavors with all of us Forumites as time is marching on. I and others are missing some great Steel guitar Reece, whether you believe it or not! Lets get with it now, while you and I are still around.
Would you Forumites like to hear everything he did????? I would, good or bad!

Richard....I originally had a box of 5 albums called, "The Moods Of". I then recorded an album in London England called "Universal Steel Man". A few years later I recorded a Gospel CD, "The Universal Direction". I next recorded a big band CD named "Steel with Brass". My last session was done on a 12 string non pedal guitar and it was called, "Steel Play'n Texas Swing".

Concerning future releases of my old recordings....I, like you, will have to wait and see what my heart tells me. I appreciate you for your very kind words and gesture.

Reece,
I've heard you had an album called "Contrasts In Jazz" but have never actually seen it. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Reece, I've been told that it's you on steel on Willie Nelson's "Angel Flying to Close to the Ground"...any truth in that? Thanks, JH

Reece- I hope you will consider Mike's idea; lots of those recordings are made of the rare element "unobtanium" and many of us would really enjoy hearing and learning from these otherwise unavailable recordings. The release would be fairly exclusive, going to people who really know what they are hearing- long time fans and supporters of your music.

I'm ready for any and all of your stuff, Reece.
My all time favorite non pedal steel song of all time is Roly Poly from "Steel Play'n Texas Swing"
If you guys haven't heard it, you're missing out big time.
Truly some of the best steel ever recorded.

As of this morning, Moods Volume 5 is no longer available from the Forum catalog. I only have 3 copies of Volume 4 left, so if you want it you should order via PayPal right now.

Bill....I appreciate your interest in my recordings! "Contrasts In Jazz" might be one that Johnny Case produced which I played on. He also produced one called "Sextet Sessions" which if memory serves correct, both Tom Morrell and I played on.

Jerry....Many years ago I overdubbed a number of songs with Willie at his studio. I honestly don't remember which one's they were. I greatly appreciate your question.

John....I think you cremated a new word with "unobtanium"! Thank you for your comment which I'm now seriously considering because of kind people such as yourself.

Jay....Thank you for your comments and for remembering me. I have to be honest, my CD, "Steel Play'n Texas Swing" while playing only the non pedal guitar, has outsold any other recording I have ever made.

bOb....I appreciate your offering my recordings through your forum!

Well, if it will help, I, too, would dearly love to hear those records. Reece, you were the reason I began playing steel back in 1971...so, please consider a re-release or compilation...maybe on DVD (for some photos and such). Like it or not, you're part of the steel's historical fabric, so let the history lesson begin!!

I have the "Moods Of" set, "Steel With Brass", and "Universal Direction" on vinyl, I would love to have them on CD, and anything else Reece could make available. I also have the "Sextet Sessions" records. If you're into Jazz, this is great stuff. Maurice and Tom Morrell both, as well as the Case brothers, do a great job. There is only one song per side, 15 minutes long, with extended soloes for all the players. This is Jazz the way it's supposed to be IMHO.

DANG that's nearly the holy grail of Texas jazz swing.

Unobtainioum indeed!

These old vinals or things only realeased on cassette deserve release in a current format.

I have a record in my collection by Reece called "Modern Steel Guitar". Probably dates from the early 60s. A retiring steeler gave me his record collection. I picked up this recording and saw that Tom Morrell was playing trombone on it. Anyway I looked the record jacket over and pulled the record out to play it and found some promo MSA steel pics and a sales brochure that came with the record. Cool. But not as cool as when the record started playing!! Man I was tickled to hear such incredible jazz! Big fat tone on the guitar, none of this wimpy E9 cryin' stuff. This is a recording that should be made into a CD. Reece probably has the master tape stuck in a drawer somewhere.

Mike W....Thank you for your interest in my recordings.

The fact I possibly contributed to something as significant, positive and enjoyable to your life as playing, is overwhelming to me, and I most sincerly appreciate your telling me.

Darvin W...."Steel w/ Brass", "Universal Direction" and "Steel Play'n Texas Swing" are all available on CD. Thank you for your interest and for being a loyal MSA owner.

David D....Thank you for your flattering words and your interest.

I would love to see "Moods Of" being re-mastered and re-issued on CD, even though or better because I have never had the pleasure to hear it. But I have heard so much about it...

Let me share a little recent story about "The Universal Direction":
I had a Brazilian girlfriend a while ago. Her family used to send her stuff from Brazil, such as fotos, sexy clothes, pictures and records of her brother in law. He does Christian music in Portugues. One evening I heard her listening to music from an other room and thought she was listening to Maurices "The Universal Direction". As I approached the room I was surprised to hear Portugues singing, but the arangements and the songs seemed so similar. I mentioned it to her and gave her a "T U D" tape. She listened to it and loved it. I had never confronted her much with the steelguitar thing before.
Months later family of hers visited and when they left agian for Brazil, she asked me if she could send the "T U D" tape along with them to her brother in law in Brazil. I agreed and off it went. Now I've got to add, that besides singing, her brother in law works as a long distance bus driver. So, a few weeks later we got the word from his wife that he had just come back from a two weeks shift that had him criss-cross Brazil and that he still had "That" tape in the bus' music system just as he put it in when he left. By then 100's if not 1000's of Brazilians had been traveling to Maurices steelguitar sounds... and this is not the kind of country where you want to force people to listen to music they wouldn't like to.

Now you may know that this record has been recorded a good while ago and this little story, so I think, tells us a couple of things and among these:

-Good music doesn't expire.
-Tasteful playing is universal (I'm not talking about the tuning) and can make our instrument a pleasant listening experience to non-steelguitar-addicts, thus promoting it.

In other words, yes, Maurice needs to put these records on CD.

... J-D.

Bill H....Sorry, I didn't mean to appear non-reponsive to your kind words. As you can see by the entry time, I was writing my response's when you made your post, consequently I was not aware of your post until now.

It's amazing you would find old MSA promotional material and pictures. I would love to see all that someday.

I recorded "Moderd Steel Guitar"in 1969 at Sellers recording studio in Dallas.

The master tapes deteriated, but my sweet mother still has a pristene vinyl recording she stored long ago.

Thank you for your comments and for bringing back such great memories.

Mark K....I'm glad to know something I said helped you. Mastering the art of thinking ahead is one of the true secrets to becoming an exceptional player.

J.D.....Thank you so much for sharing that story. I'm honored!

You know there's a lot of great steel players out there, but as in any field there's only a very few that take it outside the lines and clear new ground for the rest to follow. Reece qualifies as one of those I think as much as anyone does!!

I believe these recordings should be made available for the new generations coming up who may otherwise never know the broad scope that can be covered on this instrument! The steel guitar is one of the most "pigion holed" instruments there is, but it don't have to be that way as Reece and a very few others have demonstrated!

If more of this music was out and available and other players heard it, the inspiration to take the instrument in that direction would have to follow! I for one never knew of all this music Reece recorded and that is partially my fault for not asking. The recording that are available now of Reece's I have except one and I'd love to add these others to my collection!!

Another example of how "timeless" this music is.....my 4 yr. old daughter has been into Reece's music for about 2 1/2 years now. Yes I made her listen to it the first time, but she's been asking for it ever since!!

So Reece my friend, you've got two request from this house to let it be printed!! We would surely appreciate it!!

There are a lot of new Steel players like myself, who are just now developing our "must have" collections. We have a real need for historic recordings like these. Reece, please work towards a CD release of whatever material of yours you can. Thanks,
